Near Central Park and Museums

If you want a quiet stay near the Park on the Upper East Side, this little boutique hotel is top-notch. Staff is excellent. Great location. Expensive.

Hotel will be even nicer....

We were there In Aug., & the hotel was scheduled to close in Sept. for renovations. Would imagine it will be a more beautiful, & up to date hotel when it reopens. We loved the extra large rooms, & the location is great!

Surrey is now gone

Surrey "was" a nice efficiency apartment type hotel. We stayed in it the last night it was open. The staff was very friendly considering they did not know if they had jobs anymore. This was probably the most reasonably priced place to stay on the upper east side with these accommodations. It is being remodeled into smaller rooms according to staff. It is part of the Affina brand of hotels now.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

If you want to get away from the city, staying in this area, upper east or west side, allows you to walk over to Central Park for some peace and quiet or jogging, running, biking, etc.

Closed for renovation mid-Sept. 2008

Wonderful location, 3 blks from subway in a lovely neighborhood at Central Park east, between MMofA and Frick. All employees so gracious and kind, room spacious, clean and quiet. Having kitchen was great convenience. Grocery nearby, reasonable diners nearby. Were told that mid-Sept 2008 hotel will close for at least 18 months. Complete renovation planned to gain 5-star quality.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Ignore the guidebooks and do NOT bother patronizing the famous bar at nearby hotel (you know the one). They have exorbitant cover charge which is not advertised UNTIL you get your bill. Drinks are mediocre and seating is crowded and uncomfortable.

Was great location and spacious.

Decor was a bit dated, like 1990’s, but overall adequate for our one night stay.

Great hotel for families in a good location

Our family stayed here for 3 nights in August, 2008 (2 adults & 3 kids). We were able to get a 1 bedroom suite which is essentially a converted apartment with a full(but small) kitchen, living area with a pull out couch and a bedroom with two queen beds. It provided the family plenty of space. There were two walk-in closets as well. Every employee we came into contact with was very nice and helpful. The hotel is located half a block from Central Park on the Upper East side. There is a playground right near the closest entrance and only a few blocks down to the carousel. It’s also not far from the JackieO reservoir and jogging trail. About 5 blocks walk to the closest subway (on Lexington). Overall great experience

Traveler's tip on dining

The hotel is only a couple of blocks from Lexington Ave. There are lots of dining choices on Lexington including a great one on 83rd & Lexington called the Lexington Candy Shop which is a diner with the best lemonade in NYC.

Would definitely go back

Very convenient to museums, shopping, dining. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. We had a suite, which was a quiet and comfort respite after a busy day.

Great location and excellent value

If you are going to the Museum Mile or Upper East Side, this hotel is perfect. It needs a little renovation, but the rooms are huge and the staff is very friendly. It’s around the corner from the Whitney, within walking distance of the Met, and a block from Central Park. For all you get, the price can’t be beat!

Old Style Charm

What a wonderful treasure. The suite was large with a kitchenette, two queen beds and a pull out couch. Great for families. We love the old architecture and style. At the end of July, it is scheduled to shut down for renovation. Yes, it could use updating in the heating/cooling systems and the size of the bathrooms. But it would be a shame if it gets modernized and lose its charm. If you are traveling to New York City before the end of the month, stay here. Wonderful staff. Convenient to the museums and Central Park. And just a short, inexpensive taxi ride to midtown and the theater area.

Walk 2 blocks to the east to Lexington Avenue for varied choices of restaurants and shops.

Great location

Located in quiet neighborhood in upper East Side, 1/2 block to Central Park. One-bedroom suite was very spacious; excellent for kids. Definitely a well-worn room, but clean. Staff very nice; even gave us an umbrella when we were surprised by a thunderstorm.

Central Park is beautiful and very close; 1/2 block to Metropolitan Museum of Art; close to Metro. Boathouse in Central Park has reasonably priced food for breakfast. Kids enjoyed Alice’s Tea Room on upper westside - not cheap, but very charming.

Charming, large, but old

Fabulous space for our family in a fabulous location, but the hotel is old and in need of updating -- bathroom fixtures, carpet, TV’s etc. We easily looked the other way and enjoyed everything about it.

It’s ok but with flaws

Its location is very good. The service ok. But I was surcharged with a bottle of wine. No arguing worked because I checked out too early in the morning and the attendent did not have the authority to rectify the bill. This is very bad for anyone disliking unfairness.

We enjoyed our stay in NYC more, due to the comfort and location of The Surrey.

The rooms in our suite were quite large and very comfortable; the staff were all friendly, prompt, and helpful. The rooms were kept well-cleaned. The kitchenette was a great convenience. The food from Baloud Cafe was excellent, but pricy. The hallway carpets were a bit shabby, but our suite was fresh and inviting. The location is excellent. The value of The Surrey Hotel, (considering all its virtues) is quite good. We found that friends of our friends often stay there. We plan to, too, again, in the future.

GREAT LOCATION, Upper East Side

The locaion was great, therefore, I would make a recommendation based on this. The air conditioner was not very effective in cooling off the room even after a request was made to the front desk to look into this.

Traveler's tip on dining

Excellent dining in area!!

Great Location-nice neighborhood-perfect Honeymoon

The Surrey is conveniently located to a local grocery mart, subway station on Lexington and a great place to stay for exploring Central Park. We took the advice of others about dining at 3 brothers restaurant around the corner, very good breakfast, everything was fresh to order. So much to do and you can walk down Fifth Avenue to St. Patrick’s cathedral in a matter of 15-20 minutes.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

Bring your rollerblades, Central Park is right next door.

Large room with good friendly staff

Although the interior of the room should be updated the size of the room was extremely large for New York City. The staff was was very good. The service was very good. I would recommend this hotel.

Tons of Space in a Perfect Location

The Surrey Hotel is steps from Central Park, museums and fabulous shopping. The rooms could use some updating, but they were clean, comfortable and huge by New York standards. The one-bedroom suite is excellent for anyone traveling with a child. And the staff couldn’t have been nicer or more helpful. We’ll definitely return.

Wonderful Hotel

This hotel was fabulous. The staff was very courteous and helpful. We stayed in a one bedroom suite which was the size of many one bedroom apartments. Most important was the location which literally less than a block from Central Park. We hope to visit again very soon.

Enjoyed Stay

Although the weather in NYC wasn’t cooperative, we thoroughly enjoyed our time there as we did our stay at the Surrey Hotel. The staff was extremely nice and helpful. As has been mentioned in other reviews, the hotel could use some updating, but our room was spacious and clean. The location is just a half block from Central park and close to museums and shopping and not far from the subway. We made a good choice in staying there and would do so again.

Very comfortable for two people sharing the suite.

We were very impressed with the hotel, the excellant restaurant, Cale Boulud, and the service at the hotel. My friend and I slept in different spacious rooms. I had the living room, where the bed was very comfortable and the lighting good for reading.Excellant location and quiet.

Good family hotel

The suite is perfect for families with young children. Can save money by eating breakfast and lunch in the room as there is a mini stove and refrigerator.
