Lacks basic amenities
Can you believe that if you have your bath after 9 am, there is no running hot water. Even 1 star motels provide that. The management knows it but does not want to do anything about it.

Posted: 24-Nov-09Thank you for taking a moment to review our hotel. Your feedback is very important to us, and will always be considered when we are looking for ways to improve. With regards to the hot water in our hotel, we normally receive very few complaints. It is possible that during your stay we were finishing up renovations on our boiler. These month long renovations are now complete; I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. We hope that you may give our hotel another chance on a future visit to New York.

Location location location
The entrance and lobby are attractive, and the staff is friendly at the Ameritania. However, our room was really small. We had a queen bed. The floor was damaged/sunken under the carpet tiles in a medium size area. The bathroom was tiny, and Ive never seen such a small vanity & sink. Our first impression was dismay. We called the desk to ask for an upgrade, but they only had another room with a king bed, and it didnt sound like the room was any bigger. We stayed, realizing we would not be in our room much. However, we were on the 6th floor, so we heard a lot of street noise. We bought ear plugs after the first night. I will say that the shower was great. The Twist Lounge was closed for our entire stay. Its all about the location, which was great - close to the Ed Sullivan Theater, Carnegie Hall, Central Park. This hotel has a great price for the location, but I would not stay there again.
Spring or Fall and stroll thru Central Park at its prettiest.

Posted: 24-Nov-09Thank you for sharing your feedback. The issues mentioned in your review are in the process of being addressed. It may be surprising, but many hotels in New York City - the same age as ours - have similar sized rooms as we do. That being said, we do offer many larger rooms as well. I am sorry that one of our larger rooms was not available during your stay. While we cannot increase the size of all of our rooms, we will be updating and improving our entire property in the coming year. It is wonderful to know that you found our staff to be friendly, and that the shower and our location were both great. We hope that you may consider our hotel again in the future; we would like very much to make your next stay with us a more enjoyable one.

Ok for vacation travel -- not good for business travel.
The hotel is clean. The renovations shown in the pictures are superficial and cheaply done. Its OK if you want a vacation hotel room and you dont plan to do much except sleep. For business, I could not wait to leave. I was supposed to stay for a 14 day business trip, but after four days, I found another hotel. The place is not set up for business. The desk is tiny, there is no business center, and even the front desk could not print and/or fax a document for me. There is no room service or coffee service in the room. It is in a good location -- theater district and a few blocks from Times Square. My client was in Herald Square and it was easy to walk (nice 1 mile walk) through Times Square to the client. Neighborhood seems safe at night too.
Dont stay at this hotel.,

ok for what u pay - great location
location is great... room is clean but very small, private bathroom room with one king bed is tiny. bar in the lobby looks tempting and welcoming but doesnt work/out of service. 3 minute walk from times square and 5 minutes from columbus circle.
Traveler's tip on local attractions
for breakfast get bagels near starbux, they are great and cheap... also wholefoods is nearby - columbus circle... times square is a three minute walk.

Posted: 24-Nov-09Thank you for sharing your thoughts about our property. We appreciate your recommendation of our hotel to others. I am glad to hear that you found your room to be clean, and that our location was great. I am sorry that we did not have one of our larger Deluxe King rooms available during your stay. Unfortunately, like many other older hotels in New York City some of rooms tend to be on the smaller side; we do offer many larger rooms as well though. We hope to reopen our bar as soon as possible, pending current repairs and renovations that are taking place there. It would be our pleasure to have you as our guest again in the future. We look forward to your next visit.

Convienent place to stay in mid-town near Times Square
Clean place to stay, pleasant staff, good location to mid-town with lots of things to do or needs in immediate area. Only downfalls, hotel has no on premises facilties for food currently. Rooms tends to be pretty small with the bathrooms being very tight. But clean and reasonably priced.

Within walking distance of everything
We stayed at this hotel during the week of 4th of July. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Very cheerful. Room was small, but all we used it for was for sleeping and showering. Bathroom was a bit cramped but we are not high maintance and do not need a hotel room the size of a mansion to stay in. So, as long as all youre using your room for is a place sleep and shower, you wont get a better price and location then this hotel. Speaking of location, this hotel was about 5 min walking from times square, 8-10 min walk to central park. Right around the corner to David Letterman. We walked everywhere and only used a taxi and subway to get to Yankee Stadium. We are very pleased with this hotel and would definitely stay here on another trip to NY.
Traveler's tip on local attractions
Save money on taxis and just walk. Hotel is within walking distance of Times Square, St. Patricks Cathedral, Madaam Tussauds, Central Park, Rockafeller Center.

Cozy!
The hotel staff was awesome from check-in to check-out. My room was small, but thats exactly what I was expecting, and I didnt need more, so it was just fine. The closet area was large, and it had a safe that was large enough to hold my laptop. The bathroom was GREAT - tub/shower with great pressure and plenty of hot water, huge towels, and a lot of counter space. The ONLY downer was the charge for WiFi.

Great location!
We would stay here again since its a great location, in every direction there was something amazing to see. David Lettermans show is taped right next door...the only gripe we had was that the front door was always propped open and that people could go up the elevator and no one would know. The style of the hotel is 1960s era which I like. There were interesting pieces of furniture in the lobby and waiting areas. The bed was comfortable and the towels werent as stiff as most hotels. I do wish we had a shower curtain instead of a half glass door covering half the tub.
Traveler's tip on dining
Carnegie Deli was really close but we felt it was a tourist trap. One slice of pie was $9!! Instead, get some great good at the Topaz Thai place up the street and sit in Central Park only three blocks away.

Great location
Hotel was located in a great spot for sight seeing. Subway close and in the center to go see many locations. Staff were very helpful and when we did have a slight problem with our room they were quick in helping us out. All in all I would go back for sure.

everything great but lil expensive ;-)
Everything formidable, reception was bit rude i personally felt, but my wife felt that was just the general newyorker way - so i give it to yea, may be just some twisted perception there from me ;-) I will certainly recommend it to others as a place to stay.

Great location for 1st time tourist
Big enough, clean enough, no real complaints. This was my first trip to NYC w/ 3 other 40-something guys who spent most of the time out and about. Didnt need great views or honeymoon suite or free breakfast. Just a decent place to stay close to the park and not too close to Times Sq. For the price it worked out well; better than I expected after reading some negative reviews from travelers who might have thought they would get 5 star accomodations for a 3 star price. Maybe not the most entertaining for place children, but there is an entire city out the front door to handle that.

Great location near theatres and Times Square
The hotel was great! Clean, friendly, good size rooms and had charm (not a chain). The down side is noise - its near a bar that lets out at 4am and near a parking garage. Im a lite sleeper so I heard all of this. The good side it is close to the theatres, central park, Times Square and David Letterman. Great weekend!

the beds were very comfortable the location was great
If you are looking for great location the hotel was fine,I believe if the owners really care they could replace the carpets and that would make it much better. I think that was what bother me the most. Investing in carpet would make the hotel way better since the location is exelent.

Good location and that is all....
Hotel is very well located and has a good price for NY. Needs a complete refurbishment and maintenance. In the room; although it was cleaned every day and towels being replaced by fresh ones, nothing was working properly. Safety box could not be closed, windows didnt open, window blinds position could not be changed, toilet was not working right, lavatory was simply ridiculous (about 100 sqi surface and 3 feets height). People attending in the front desk was not exactly the most friendly we ever meet. Since we used the hotel only to sleep and take a shower the good location compensate the disapointment with the overal conditions.

no good
the hotel was dirty & hot, the bathroom was ok, but the window would not close. There was a piece of plywood in the window that had a small air conditioner in it. The hallway was disgusting, with garbage & wires hanging all over. Will not go back.

Not a 3 star hotel, have to improve rm quaility first!
The bathtub drain, water went down very slow and you would be standing in 4inches of water. tile not washed down daily. No exhust in bathrm and mirror also fogged up. Closet space not big enough, only had 2 dresser drawers, should have been 3 drawers. Had to ask for 3 sets of towels everyday/nite! AC unit not big enough to cool rm.

sign up for The David Letterman Show, our Hotel window looked down on the marque and st of his show. We saw Paul McCartney perform on the roof top and the many fans looking on to the marque roof performance.

You rate 3 stars -- I rate zero stars
The room was miniscule. There was not room enough to put my luggage on the luggage rack and walk around the bed. The toilet in the bathroom had to be sat upon at an angle because it was too close to the wall in front of it to place ones feet. It took a good three or four minutes for the hot water to flow. There was a foul odorin the elevator masked by air freshener. The locale of the hotel was its only virtue in my estimation.

Great value, great location
This hotel was a great value for my family. We were very centrally located to all the activities we had planned in Times Square and Central Park. When checking in, we were automatically upgraded from a king bed to two doubles - perfect for me and my two kids. We enjoyed our time there and would absolutely stay at this hotel again.
The Bean & Bagel across the street offered extremely affordable breakfasts. The scones were also wonderful. Grab a couple of bottles of water to take with you - cheaper than buying from street carts.

Good location & price.... but everything else was terrible
On an very rainy day, rain came gushing in both the bedroom and bathroom window frames, because they hadnt been installed properly. The air conditioner worked but was extremely noisy. No air conditioning in hallways or lobby, and it was a hot week. Wet bar/sink did not work. The lounge/bar in the lobby was vacant and dark 24 hours a day. Im not sure anybody was working there. But great location in mid-town! Bed was decent, but average. I slept, so thats important.
This place is best for singles or couples who only want a place to sleep and shower, but plan on being out of the room most of the time. Its also much more affordable than anything in the neighborhood.

Ok, no frills
30 something here from Miami, Room decor was modern, However lighting was poor with Walmart quality lamps, only 1 nightstand and no full length mirror? Mirrors are generally cheap so why not have at least an additional mirror over the desk, so at least your friend can get ready while your in the bathroom and maximize the small space in Ny city, there sheets were comfortable however there was no fitted sheet ? just another flat sheet rapped around the mattress that seemed older and there was no headboard, Overall it was clean and seemed safe no frills and good location, although I could have made a few inexpensive adjustments to make the room nicer if I was the owner, Its all about the DETAILS.

Great location
Loved the location of the hotel. Decoration of lobby and rooms were really nice. Disappointed that the bar in the hotel was not open. Also, although the room was very clean, the bathroom had a strong mildew smell. (Shower sprayed the wall everytime it was used.)
This hotel offered easy access to Broadway, Times Square and Central Park. There were also great places for dinner and breakfast, as well as a small store for sundries, all within a block of the hotel.

Not a very good place to stay
Everything about this place was small. Im only 510" and 155 lbs. and I couldnt comfortably take a shower or use the bathroom at all. Place just seemed dirty and I think of the 5 days i was there, the room only got cleaned twice. And the concierge was not very helpful in letting us know about what we ccould do on our stay or where to find things. And I also asked them to order me a pair of Yankees tickets, assuming they would go through the Yankee box office, but instead they go through a broker to get any kind of attraction tickets and I ended up paying TRIPLE! the price of the tickets.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
It is pretty hard to see everything you want in a short time, but experience tells me to plan your day out and include traffic time. Instead of getting a cab everywhere, I bought tickets on one of those double-decker buses to take us around, not only is it cheaper than a cab, it takes you to all the attractions you will want to see and gives you history of the city along the way, by far the best thing I bought on the trip.

Not Impressed
We wanted a clean, cheap, central hotel. It was relatively cheap, so thats a plus. However, the cleanliness aspect was lacking in a big way. Our room was ok at first but the staff didnt clean it 3 out of the 5 days we were there. We called down and complained but nothing was done. We had to request clean towels. In addition, one evening we arrived in to find that the drains on the 10th floor had been cleared (we were on the 12th) - so every room above the 10th stank like a sewer. Not fun. Anyway, we didnt expect 5 star service. But this place got the basics wrong.
Traveler's tip on local attractions
Make sure to take the Harbor Lights Circle Line Cruise at 7:00pm. Seeing Manhattan at from the water at that time of the day is well worth it. Its also less than half the price of most bus tours.
