Waikiki’s hidden treasure

Hotel was at a great location. 5 min from Main Beach, 10 min from Zoo. All city buses stop at the end of the street. The rooms are small but well kept. Hotel employees very friendly. Great hotel for the price.

No doubt would stay again

This hotel had fantastic service: loads of information from the friendly front desk staff and driving directions from the valet guys every day - even got a car wash when I mentioned the rental had no windshield wiper fluid. Simple free breakfast out by the pool every day was nice. Good location - close to everything. The only thing that light sleepers might want to consider is that Ala Wai Blvd. (the one way street heading west just north of the hotel) is extremely busy and pretty noisy at most hours of the day and night. Nice lobby, restaurant/bar and pool. The rooms were on the small side but how much time do you spend in your room when in beautiful Hawaii?! Extremely good value, I would absolutely stay here again!

The House Without a Key restaurant at the Halekulani Hotel is a must do. Very romantic with a three piece band and former Miss Hawaii dancing traditional hula. Also, you must rent a car and see the two best beaches on the island: Kailua beach in Kailua (a gorgeous location for swimming and sunning, very quiet compared to Waikiki) and Waimea Bay Beach, just past Haleiwa on the North Shore (for big wave watching in the winter, great swimming in the summer). Also, Frommers and Fodors guidebooks are invaluable tools for: driving directions, prices and hours of operation and just general "best of."

worth the money

The hotel is located just a few blocks from Waikiki beach, all the shops and the abc store is just a block away. The hotel staff was nice and help full. We did not have any problems at this hotel. The hotel rooms were clean, BUT the hotel rooms need some remodeling. If u plan on staying in your for most of the day this is not for you. But if you’re out all day enjoying the sun and going beach hopping and just using the room to sleep in, stay at this place.

If u like eating at the beach go to dukes. Eating at dukes for breakfast is something I would highly recommend.

Safe and Clean Value Hotel

The hotel fit our needs. We wanted a budget hotel that was clean and safe for our week stay in Honolulu. Room was small but clean. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful. We stayed on the 9th floor so noise wasn’t an issue and we had a good view of the canal and mountains. The pool area was nice and it was close to food, shopping and the beach(5 minute walk). The air conditioning in the room did struggle to keep it cool and a decent chair would have been a nice addition to the room. The breakfast was as advertised. Overall, this hotel was a great value. Do you really go to Hawaii to sit in a plush hotel room? We went to see the island and this hotel saved us money we were able to use on shopping and activities.

The bus goes everywhere and it saved us some money on parking and rental fees. We did rent a car for 2 days and drove completely around the island which was well worth the money. Check out the free coupon books that you can pick up anywhere for discounts on dining and activities.

Worth every penny!

Waikiki Sands is a great value and I would stay again, depending on my budget for the trip! Let’s face it, if your staying at this hotel, you decided to skimp on hotel accommodations. It’s funny how some people want extravagant accommodations, in Hawaii mind you, from something they’re paying less than a tank of gas for. lol! Kudos to Waikiki Sands.... The staff was attentive, the pool/hot tub were cozy and the sports bar/staff were very nice. The location is about a 4 minute walk to the sand of Waikiki and all of Waikiki is within a 10 minute walk. I recommend the sliced steak dish at the bar and add a little lime. It’s super cheap and super fast!

Traveler's tip on dining

Why go out and spend the big bucks at an ok sit-down restaurant, when you can get the sliced steak dish at the bar for 10 buckaroos? Yahtzeee!

For experiment

Sand Villa is not far from the Beach, and it is convenient to walk to most WaiKiKi location. The con is that sound isolation is poor, and noise comes from the street due to construction in the early morning. For the price, you have to compromise.

Sand Villa may have three beds in a room for some family to consider. Another thing is to watch the Check-In time -- no earlier than 3:00 pm. If you arraive in the morning, do not expect to check in till 3:00pm :-(

Not a totally bad hotel to stay in for the deal we got from Expedia for our packaged trip

For the total cost of our trip package from Expedia, it wasn’t the worst hotel, but definitely not the best for the price. Their ideas of clean are definitely different from mine, and when your on vacation, you don’t want limits set for you such as a pool/hot tub closing at 9pm. Which was not advertised. And when you advertise something such as the capability of ordering movies from your TV, (how ancient that thing was) if you want, then that should work. Not call the desk to inquire, and then get the "too bad for you" answer! And then of course for the trouble, nothing is comped to you for an apologetic gesture from the staff for your disappointing stay, just not very rewarding to the consumer. I believe that when we return to Hawaii, we will be sticking to a resort. They appreciate your business, give you what they advertise, and go beyond to make your stay more than what you expected not less, and definitely don’t make you pay to park!

Traveler's tip on nightlife

Definitely make sure to stop in Jimmy Buffett’s for the nightlife, they have WONDERFUL Margarita’s, and the band will make you want to get up and dance, and they sound great!

Awsome Hotel great people

Our stay here was awsome. Everyone was very helpfull and very nice. The bar had great deals on food and drink and the workers were very helpfull and nice. If I go back to Hawaii I will ONLy stay here. I have told everyone I know that this hotel is a great place to stay.

Go to the ABC store for great deals on gifts.

Will not recommend to anyone.

The employees were friendly. My room was awful. It looked as though a child has colored on the walls and instead of painting, it just got sort of scrubbed off. There were dents everywhere. The bathroom smelled funny the whole time. The tv didnt work well. The beds were not that comfortable. Luckily, i was there to see Hawaii and wasnt in the hotel too much.

Great place to stay for the money!

Everyone was extremely courteous. The food at the Sand Bar and Grill was delicious and reasonably priced. They pool area was great! The rooms were kept extremely clean, although slight renovations could be made. The rooms were somewhat small but while there you aren’t in there alot anyway. Overall we were very satisfied and would stay there again and recommend it to others.

We purchased the Go Oahu Cards prior to our trip. For our family they were extremely useful. We rented a car for the entire week and it was great to go where and when you wanted. I would definately suggest that. We didn’t do that the first time we were there for the entire week and were greatful we did this time!

Nice room/location for a good price

We had a corner room with a balcony on both sides. Very nice and clean. Short walk to the beach and many restaurants and shops. Parking in Waikiki is a nightmare. You’re pretty much forced to use the hotel’s valet parking for 16 dollars a day. I hated it, but you can’t really blame the hotel for Waikiki’s parking problem. Also there’s a very loud garbage truck stopping early in the morning. The breakfast was the most basic I’ve ever seen in a hotel, but it was free so I can’t complain really. Some of the staff seemed a bit uninterested and not very helpful, but others were very nice. Don’t want to sound too negative though. I’d definately stay here again. Well, maybe I’d pick a hotel where you can park yourself.

good location

The hotel is a short walk away from the beach so that was nice. There are also a lot of good eating places around the hotel. The room itself was ok, we did like our view of the Ala Wai canal. We were able to see the sunrise in the morning which we enjoyed a lot. We just didnt like the bathroom, the sink was not leveled properly so the excess water ends up spilling on the floor. The other thing that bothered me was something was making this noise around our room it was like a buzzing or whatever from one of the electrical equipment. The walls are also paper thin. Luckily we were so tired by the end of the night that we’d just fall asleep easily if not, then the amount of noise in the hallway and the next room would be bothersome. We did like that the staff were pretty friendly.

Great value...

If you are not planning on spending your vacation in your hotel room, then this is a great value. Negatives: Weak continental breakfast, Needs a fresh coact of paint, Early morning loud garbage trucks (everyday), No bells and whistles Positives: Affordable, Decent location (less than 3 blocks from beach), Clean and comfortable, Nice pool and hottub, restaurant/bar

Would stay here again.

We stayed a week at this hotel, and after reviewing the hotel review almost daily, I was a bit worried about it. Comes to find out that everything was great. Yes the beds were not comfy but if your only there to hang out and be out and about its perfectly fine. You have everything in walking distance which worked perfect, only a 5 minutes walk to the beach and you can’t beat there happy hour prices. The breakfast was very low key, but for me Im not big on breakfast so toast was fine... Its usually toast, croissants, pineapple and a few condiments. The staff was very nice. I would stay there again.

Traveler's tip

North Shore Surf bus was great. Its not advertised in any of there books, just pull it up online and book it... You leave early morning get a tour of the island on your way there and you get to do different activites and they bring you back around 430 or 5.

It’s OK

This hotel is good if you’re ona budget. It’s definately conveniently located. It’s away from the noise of Waikiki, but still close enough to walk to the clubs, restaurants, shopping, etc. The hotel was pretty clean, but our air conditioner didn’t work in our room. Also, the walls are apparently very thin. The first night we got a call from the next room complaining that the walls were thin and he could hear everything we were saying. So, if you want to have aconversation, in ormal tones, with whoever you’re staying with, don’t be surprised if your neighbor calls to complain. The breakfast was also a bit of a joke. Not much to speak of, but the hotel’s restaurant serves food at a good price. Overall, I would not return, I didn’t enjoy the neighbor bothering us, and the front desk said there was nothing they could do. But if you want to save some money for dining, shopping, or whatever, this is a good place to stay. No frills or anything, but it’s a place to sleep.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

If you want to learn to surf, go to some local surf shops and ask around. The surf schools seem to be more interested in pushing their students into the waves so they can take pictures and then sell them to you after. They don’t really teach much about surfing. If you just want a 1-time photo-op experience, hit up the surf schools. if you actually want to learn to surf, hit up the locals. They’ll give you some good advice on who to learn form and where cheap board rentals are.

Great hotel for the price

Just a two lock walk to the beach in the heart of waikiki this place was great. The room was small but who stays in their room anyways? There was an internet room which I went to a few times, large inground pool and complementary breakfast that consiste of pineapple, danish, yogurt, coffee, and little donuts. I liked it and would stay there again.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Parking is about 16 bucks a night. There is free parking on the street though. We only had to pay for parking once out of 8 days. Read the signs on the street there is street cleaning 2 times a week.

GREAT much better than I expected by reviews I read

Yes the room was very much in need of paint (dirty and unpainted repairs obvious). And yes the so called breakfast (basically just cold toast and hot coffee) is an insult. EVERYTHING else was great. Real nice pool. Good location, only a few blocks from beach. Great view from our room of the canal. Frige and Air Conditioning worked great. Houskeeping came daily. Once they paint the walls and put in new carpet I wont be able to afford it so I’m happy as it is.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Restuarants in waikiki are nice but prices are out of this world. Stop at the market and pick up some grub and eat by the pool at least 1-2 meals a day (sometimes 3)

Don’t waste your time or money.

Poor hotel experience. Hotel did not honor accommodations made through Expedia. Air conditioner in room did not work entire length of stay.

Comment from the hotel's management

The Waikiki Sand Villa Hotel tries to accommodate all requests made by our guests. Unfortunately at times we are unable to accommodate all requests due to situations beyond our control. In cases like these we usually upgrade our guests to better accommodations and usually our guests appreciate the effort. In the future we will try even harder to make our guests more comfortable if at all possible.

Relaxing Vacation

The service provided by this hotel was excellent and very home away from home warming. Customer service was awesome, they would take care of anything you asked and make sure that they did it to your full expectation. Over all a very comfortable, relaxing, not a care in the world vacation in a very good part of town.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

In a very good part of town, within a mile of shopping malls and an hour of beautiful snorkeling spots and surfing.

I really liked this one.

Close to the beach and a super market with washing machines, gym, pool, free breakfast, free internet, clean rooms with a great view, it was great! The one thing I didn’t like was their valet parking. I have to pay to park?!? boo!

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

You don’t need to rent a car. After driving around the island, I found busses and shuttles going everywhere I went. I also found the little supermarket next door had cheaper food than the super market where the locals shop.
