Charming Family Cottage on Wooded Acre in the Country / Fish the Little J

Step back in time (relatively speaking), and enjoy a "tech-free" stay at our century-old family cottage, just minutes on foot to the Little Juniata River. (No "traditional" internet or broadcast TV -- so our home is ideal for guests who prefer to "unplug" from media distractions.) Although... WiFi over cellular may be possible, depending on the carrier.

The cottage features a cozy living room with a CD/DVD player and flat screen TV. A wide selection of DVD films is available, or bring your own.

Recent guests have reported adequate cellular service with Verizon and AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. AND as of October 16. 2023 a new signal amplifier is active that boosts cell reception with very promising results! We have noted that WiFi over cellular has satisfactory results on AT&T and possibly other carriers as well.

The "Little J" -- well known to fly fishers far and wide -- is one of Pennsylvania's best trout streams and popular with kayakers and river tubers as well; we are just a mile down-river from the village of Barree.

Built in 1902 on a wooded acre by 2nd and 3rd generation descendants of late 18th Century settlers of northern Huntingdon County, the home has been carefully maintained and fully modernized -- serving both as a seasonal and a long-term residence over the last 120 years. Expanded periodically over the last 100 years, the home retains many of its original architectural features together with some period furnishings.

Take your morning coffee on our newly renovated (Nov. 2021) all-seasons porch (screened in warm weather, enclosed with thermal widows in cold weather). Hike up the road into the Rothrock State Forest lands. Hike the Mid-state Trail from nearby trail head with adequate parking.

The cottage comprises about 975 sq ft (90 sq m) and can accommodate 4 guests comfortably.

The kitchen is equipped with dish soap, dish cloths and dish towels, pots and pans, cooking utensils, toaster, toaster oven with broiler, microwave oven, plates, cups, coffee pots, glasses, and flatware. The kitchen seats up to 4 persons, with a 1920s-era Hoosier cupboard and a professionally-restored, 1950s-era gas range, ready for stove-top cooking.

If you plan to bake, roast or even just reheat an item, ask us to set the oven's standing pilot for you prior to arrival. (Note that this model range did not include a broiler.)

The two bedrooms are in the half-story loft: one with a queen bed and the other with two twin beds. (While many of our guests prefer to bring their own BED and BATH linens, we can furnish these at a nominal fee to cover our laundry costs and make up the beds for you.) We furnish bed pillows. comforters and light blankets.

You can draw the privacy curtain between the rooms if needed. The loft has air conditioning in hot and humid weather. (The first floor remains comfortable for most summer weather because of large shade trees surrounding the house. If needed, there is also an air conditioner in the living room that keeps the first floor comfortable in extremely hot and humid weather.)

The full bath has a tub with shower.

Our cottage is clean but not fussy: a kick-off-your-shoes, settle-in-with-a-good-book-or-good-conversation kind of place.

We are about 50 minutes from Penn State University and about 20 minutes from Juniata College.

Convenience stores and gas stations (10 minutes to Petersburg or to Alexandria) and supermarkets (20 minutes to Huntingdon) are within convenient driving distances. Several local eateries are close by for eat-in or take-out, and some for delivery.

Lovely weekend getaway
Everything about our stay at this cozy mountain cottage was wonderful except we wish we could have stayed longer! Guy was a wonderful host from arrival and even after departure. We thoroughly appreciated the location and the quiet atmosphere. We were able to get to/from the Penn State football game on Saturday, no problem, and enjoyed a couple of the restaurant recommendations Guy provided in addition to some leisurely drives and walks. Thank you, and we definitely look forward to coming again!

Great cottage and location!
This place is off of a Rothrock State Forest road but we only saw 3 cars go by the entire 3 days we were there. The historic cottage was very comfortable and clean. My brother and I took our dad here to fish for Father's Day weekend. He loved it. The Little Juniata River is about a 100 yards down the State Forest Rd so we walked down there frequently to fish and seine. I would get my morning run in by running the other direction into the State Forest. Beautiful area to run. The owner was very friendly and great to work with. There is a lock box on the porch to access the key. No wifi or cable but that was no problem for us. The cell signal is weak but we were able to make calls and send text messages. I liked that we didn't have external distractions. My brother and dad liked it so much they suggested that we stay there every year for Father's Day. We are already planning a trip back soon.

Take a step back in time to this awesome cabin. We stayed for a guys weekend and caught a Penn State game. It was about 25 minutes to the stadium but worth the drive. Breath taking trout stream walking distance from the place.
