Il a notamment construit la Columbus-Haus, sur le Potsdamer Platz entre 1930 et 1932, un immeuble de bureaux et de commerces de 9 étages, très moderne pour l'époque. Incendié lors du soulèvement populaire de juin 1953 en RDA, il a été détruit en 1961. Erich Mendelsohn a du fuir l'Allemagne en 1933 pour échapper aux persécutions des nazis envers les juifs. Il a émigré d'abord au Royaume-Uni, puis en Palestine pour se fixer aux USA en 1941.
