Check out Palmar Norte Park and Finca 6 Archaeological Site—just a couple of the sights around Boruca.

Famous for its colorful wooden masks, the indigenous mountain-top community of Boruca is worth a visit for anyone interested in the cultures of Costa Rica. There are many artists here who are happy to share their craft with you. Masks make very reasonably priced souvenirs. Their festival every December 30- January 2 is an amazing event, not to be missed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Boruca?
The best area to stay in Boruca is within the village itself, particularly near the main community center and the local museum.

Staying directly in Boruca village offers an authentic experience centered around the Indigenous community's culture. The village is compact and walkable, with homes, workshops, and communal spaces clustered together. You'll find the main church, the local school, and the community-run museum, which showcases the history and artistry of the Boruca people, within easy reach.

For travelers interested in cultural exchange and learning, staying in the village is ideal. Many local families offer guesthouse accommodations, providing an opportunity to experience daily life, participate in cultural workshops, and learn directly from artisans about their traditional crafts, especially their renowned masks.
When is the best time to go to Boruca?
The best time to go to Boruca is during the dry season, which runs from December to April.

During these months, you'll experience sunny days and minimal rainfall, making it ideal for exploring the village and its surroundings. The drier conditions are superb for walking tours of the community, visiting local artisan workshops, and enjoying outdoor activities without interruption. This period is particularly good for travelers interested in the intricate weaving and carving demonstrations, as artisans are often more active and accessible without the worry of rain.

For those interested in cultural events, the dry season also coincides with the lead-up to the annual Fiesta de los Diablitos (Festival of Little Devils), which typically takes place from December 30th to January 2nd. While the festival itself can be crowded, visiting Boruca just before or after this period in the dry season allows for a deeper appreciation of the preparations and the lasting impact of this significant cultural event.
