Comboyne is a charming village resting in the heart of bushwalking trails, including those at Bridal Veil Falls Nature Reserve. Stroll around the 534-acre (216-hectare) reserve for panoramic views across the plateau and the falls tumbling over the rocky cliff dotted with soaring trees. Explore alongside the Thone River and subtropical rainforest gullies. Watch for birds and animals in this wildlife corridor. Sightings have included koalas and black cockatoos.
For more hiking trails, head to nearby Boorganna Nature Reserve. Located on the edge of Comboyne Plateau, it’s one of the oldest nature reserves in New South Wales. Bring binoculars, as it’s also a top spot for bird watching. Try to spot the more than 80 bird species, along with wallabies and the yellow-bellied glider possums. Bring a picnic basket full of the local produce that the region is known for, such as blueberries, avocados and macadamia nuts.
Set out on the Rawson Falls walk, which leads down to the base of the waterfall of the same name. Once there, admire the falls as they cascade into a deep plunge pool. Cool off with a dip in the natural pool and admire the forest backdrop, along with blooming flowers in spring and bright foliage in autumn.
If you can’t get enough of waterfalls, you’re in luck. Drive about 25 minutes from Boorganna to Ellenborough Falls, a stunning 650-foot (200-meter) single-drop waterfall. Traverse more than 600 steps to the bottom of the valley to gaze back up at the spectacular sight. Allow about 2 hours to walk to the bottom and back. A kiosk at the top opens on weekends to sell homemade baked goods. Before leaving the area, take photos of the falls from the opposite side of Ellenborough Gorge.
The best way to explore the hinterland region around Bridal Veil Falls Nature Reserve is to rent a car and enjoy scenic drives. Start in Comboyne Village, a 50-minute drive from Port Macquarie on the coast. On the way, stop at the historic dairy-farming village of Byabarra, originally known as Sleepy Hollow. Free parking is available at all the area nature reserves.
