Migratory birds and cherry trees grace the riverside parks of a picturesque district with an airport and a gothic lighthouse.

Adorned by leafy parks and intriguing landmarks, the Gangseo District is a coastal delight just outside the city center of Busan. The district is a little less populated than some of its neighboring zones and has a range of exotic wildlife. Visit the Gangseo District to learn about the Gaya people who constructed burial cemeteries here in the 3rd and 4th centuries.

Explore gorgeous Daejeo Ecological Park to appreciate views of the Nakdong River. Stroll along paths that meander through marshes, passing traditional windmills and scenic areas of flowers. Bring your binoculars to spot the array of migratory birds passing through the park. The annual Nakdong Canola Festival takes place here in April in what is thought to be the country’s largest canola field.

In spring, relax in a sea of pink amid the cherry blossoms of Maekdo Saengtae Park. Rent a bicycle to get around the riverside park in style. For something a little different, place your bets at the Busan–Gyeongnam Horse Racing Park, one of Busan’s largest hippodromes. The kids will love petting the ponies in Ponyland. Enjoy a picnic on the shore of the lake beside the racing park.

Amble along the coastal paths overlooking the sea at the southern end of the district. Here, you’ll find the Gadeokdo Lighthouse, whose gothic features recall a French architectural style. Consider the well-preserved state of the edifice, constructed in 1909. It marks the entrance to Jinhae Bay, which was an important military and trade base in the past.

Gangseo District stretches west from the Nakdong River in Busan. Arrive at Gimhae International Airport and travel around the district by bus or taxi. While in the region, make sure to visit surrounding zones such as the Dongnae District, Geumjeong and Nam-gu. The Gangseo District is a scenic area with parks, windmills, lighthouses and a place for ponies.
