Step back in time to the gold rush era at an iconic site surrounded by walking trails dotted with historical artifacts.

The site of one of Parkes’ first gold mines is at Bushman’s Hill Reserve, in the heart of nature. Explore the area via scenic hiking trails that wind up to the top of the hill. Nearby, visit beautiful, landscaped gardens to learn about Indigenous culture and plants used for food, medicines and toolmaking.

A gold mine operated at Bushman’s Hill more than 100 years ago. Stroll along the walking paths to enjoy nature. Look and listen for native birds in the trees. Along the way, you’ll see historical relics and memorials including monuments dedicated to people who lost their lives in the mine. Bushman’s Mine was established in 1863 and 30 years later yielded more than 5,000 pounds (2,200 kilograms) of gold.

After a walk, admire the Garradyang Cultural Garden. It was designed by Elizabeth Briton, a local landscape designer. Discover plants commonly used by the Wiradjuri people, the traditional landowners of the Parkes Region, with a history stretching back more than 40,000 years. Learn about plants used for healing and eating, along with those used to craft tools and other items required for day-to-day life in the bush.

The Indigenous cultural precinct also includes the Wiradjuri Amphitheatre, along with fascinating artworks by Wiradjuri artists. Spend some time simply contemplating the spiritual significance of the site via stories of traditions.

Nearby is Kelly Reserve, a fantastic place to visit if you're traveling with children. The park features a colorful playground near Bushman’s Dam. Enjoy a picnic or barbecue in a dedicated area then walk around to spot local wildlife. Take memorable photos with a steam locomotive that represents the railway pioneers of Parkes. There’s also the Elvis Wall of Fame, which actually highlights Australian entertainment history and features pioneers of the music scene.

Bushman’s Hill Reserve in Parkes is accessible every day of the year and free to enter. Park at Kelly Reserve or around Wentworth Street for easy access.
