1802 cottage once part of Monticello and owned by Thomas Jefferson

Auburn Hill MADISON cottage Circa 1802 offer a peaceful private setting on a historic horse farm once owned by Thomas Jefferson and part of the original Monticello estate, a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. with close proximity to wineries (10 minutes), town (12 minutes), Monticello (next door neighbor), Rivanna River(borders the property) Carter mountain (8 minutes), Clifton Inn ( 2 minutes) and many other activities. The cottage dates back to 1805, the property was once part of Monticelo and owned by Thomas Jefferson. It has been completely updated and modernized, combining the best of both worlds. There is a private lake (catch and release fishing), along with a 14 foot dingy for those qualified to operate it!

A "Jimmy Buffet Key West" 20 x 40 heated salt water pool complex with a PRIVATE HIIGH END JACUZZI FOR EACH COTTAGE a large grill with side burner, two large bars, pavilion, indoor/outdoor showers, bathroom/changing room, multiple outdoor games, two fire pit, two double hammocks and mountain/pasture views with complete privacy to enjoy the area. Most times it will be only you at the pool area. It is a working farm so there will be help around the farm to keep it well groomed for visitors.

Magical setting for watching wildlife like the bald eagles soaring down the river, multiple deer grazing in the fields, geese and ducks floating on the lake, or Great Blue Heron trying to catch lunch. Once on the farm you do not see any close neighbors (cottage is near main house, but situated to maximize privacy), unless you count looking up at the distant hillside to Monticello(see photo). The whistle or light rumbling of the distant train across the river can be heard on occasion. You can walk down to the rivers edge and sit on a large bolder watching the occasion kayakers floating down the river(or bring your own). James Monroe's home is only 10 minutes away, along with 14 wineries and 15 beer or cider breweries within 10 miles of the farm.

Madison Not For Us, But Cowboy Was Great
My husband and I checked in for our 8 day stay in the Madison at Auburn Hill Farm and immediately had a problem. He’s 6’3” and the ceilings were mostly closer to mid 5’ range. Thankfully, the host was able to accommodate us by moving us to The Cowboy Hideaway. This spacious cabin had all of the amenities we needed and more. There was a private hot tub, grill, patio set and fire pit with tons of views. We truly enjoyed our stay on the property.

Gorgeous farm…
Do not stay in this unit(Madison) if you are over 5’5”. Ceiling is very low, dormers make it lower. Parking is far from unit with no night time lighting on the pathway. I was there during the fall and the colors were magnificent! The farm was beautiful. The area great to explore. Host leaves no book with recommendations of laces to see or restaurants to enjoy. People in town were very friendly and helped me out a lot. A book with that and instructions for the stove, check out process, etc. would be helpful.

We loved the property and Steve had so many electronic finishing touches that made all the difference in the world. He was such a kind person! The mattress wasn't very firm but other than that, the whole place and experience was great. We plan to return!

What a lovely weekend we had at Steve’s beautiful home. The location is perfect for winery tours, the University, some remarkable regional restaurants, or just to relax by the pool. We will definitely be returning, either with another couple or just the two of us, for another perfect getaway. Thank you, Steve, for your hospitality.

Amazing property with a tuck-away oasis of a backyard area that is second to none. Pool, hot tubes, hammocks, and an outdoor bar surrounded by nature; and even better at night when the outdoor lights are on. You won't be disappointed and highly recommended.

Fabulous! We can't wait to stay again!
My husband and I took a long weekend to explore Charlottesville and visit Monticello, and we absolutely loved staying at the cottage. The property is gorgeous, and we absolutely felt like we were at home from the moment we arrived. (We really enjoyed the pool!) The cottage is located so close to everything, but you feel like you are in a secluded place. Loved hearing the frogs at night, and hearing the birds singing in the morning. Our host, Steve, was so friendly and thoughtful. (Thank you, Steve! We really loved that bread you shared!) We cannot wait to return and enjoy staying at this beautiful property again.

Bait and Switch. Beware!
Miserable! I rented the downstairs unit called Jefferson House cottage and I have an email from the host "Steve" conforming such. When we arrived 4 months later he acted confused because other guests were already in the Jefferson House unit. Then he said he could not get on the VRBO app to confirm our reservation (really?). I showed him my conformation printout and he ignored his email that we clearly rented the Jefferson House but he pointed to property #2541495 and said, oh yea, that number that VRBO confirmed was for the "Madison Unit" which WAS A LIE. There is no way I would even rent that unit, it was not what I signed up for. I would never stay in such a Hobbit Hole that was claustrophobic. The Madison House WAS NOT the unit I rented and it was a totally inferior space with very low ceilings so we had to stoop all the time and you could barely fit into the bathroom. The Jefferson unit I reserved had a fireplace, separate bedroom, normal ceiling heights, and a nice garden outside with a table. After we checked in and I told Steve he made a mistake he denied it, Upon checking out I told him he ruined out trip by putting us in a unit which we never would have rented Not only that, not many things were as promised. There was no rowboat on the pond, the pool was not heated as promised, and the coffee machine and TV were disfunctional. It was a miserable experience! Steve said if VRBO can conform he put us in the wrong unit he will refund out money. Please help!

A gem in Charlottesville
A fantastic find. Secluded property, yet close to everything in Charlottesville. Although we've been to Charlottesville many times, the host turned us on to several restaurants that are now at the top of our list. I'm 6ft 1in tall and had no problems with the sloping ceilings. We will definitely be back.

Great experience, exactly what we expected and were looking for.
No complaints, we stayed in the upper cottage which is as nice and cozy. We were there in colder temps, so did not get to experience the pool, but did take advantage of the hammocks and hot tub. I imagine the pool area with the covered areas, grill, and bonfire areas would be great for a family reunion. For dinners we went into Charlottesville which was about 20 mins away. The one minor thing to note, is that there is noise travels between the two units easily. On our last night there we could easily hear the people below us.
