![Mount Aso (阿蘇山, Asosan) is an active volcano in the center of Kyushu which most recently erupted in October 2016 but has since calmed down again. Aso's ancient caldera ranks among the world's largest, with a diameter of up to 25 kilometers and a circumference of over 100 kilometers. In the center of the caldera stand the mountain's active volcanic peaks, including Mount Nakadake, shown in this photo.

Due to increased volcanic activity at the time of our visit, a no-entry zone was currently maintained and resulted in the closure of the ropeway, road and hiking trails to the crater. "Beautiful spot inside and out. Super easy to check in and out. Very clean and pretty close to the main hub by car but a bit scary to drive down at night so bring enough food. I can only imagine when the trees outside blossom and how beautiful that would look. I guess I need to come back 😉 "

"This was our favorite apartment accomodation in Japan. Very comfortable and enough space for 2 and in a great location. We could walk to the station and to the city center and castle. The small kitchen was fine for making a small breakfast and coffee. And we really appreciated the wash machine and drying rack! Check in worked exactly as described. Highly recommended!"

"Impeccable service! So we did not indicate that we have two children joining us as we always do when we book our accommodation. The owner couple accommodated us in all ways, providing the children with meals and even remaking the bed such that it fit the four of us. "Loved this hotel so much! My stay in Osaka and Tokyo pale in comparison to it. The bed was fluffy and just soft like I like my beds. The room was spacious with a proper area to eat. Shower and toilet were tucked away but both big places for a plus size person like me. Loved the location. Loved all the amenities. Highly recommend if you’re planning to stay in Kumamoto. It was pricey but worth it. "
