![The Harburg Castle is one of the largest, best-preserved castles in all of Germany. Visiting Harburg and the Harburg Castle is like stepping back into the Middle Ages! Harburg Castle is one of the jewels of the Romantic Road. Wonderfully preserved, the castle sits high on a hill and overlooks the town for which it's named.
It is unclear when the first structure was erected, but the castle was first mentioned in a document in 1150. However, historians believe that portions of the castle may have been built in the 10th and 11th centuries, and Roman remains have been found on the site.

Because of its strategic location, it provided a military stronghold during the reign of the Staufer-Kings from 1079 to 1272. It was referenced in documents in 12th century as the Staufer Imperial Castle. In 1295, the castle was transferred to the Count of Oettingen and it has been in the Oettingen, and later the Oettingen-Wallerstein, families ever since.

The castle complex, including the castle house, chapel, sentry walk (complete with holes through which to pour hot oil on invading marauders!), prison tower, dungeon, and various buildings used to support the inhabitants, is surrounded by a wall supporting six towers. "Die Kommunikation mit dem Gastgeber erfolgte problemlos. Die Wohnung ist klein, aber sehr modern und sauber. Die angepriesene Kaffeemaschine ist eine Tassimo (Geschmacksache). Begeistert waren wir vom Wasserdruck in der Dusche und dem stetig warmen Wasser (kennen wir in Oettingen definitiv anders). Fazit: Sehr empfehlenswert - wir kommen gerne wieder!"

"Thomas was very good at responding quickly and gave good directions to the apartment. The bed was comfortable The kitchen had an oven and a stovetop with a bonus of a fancy coffee machine with lots of cream & sugar. The shower had great pressure and was very clean. The apartment was very close to all the amenities and beautiful parks. This is out of the owners control but the tenant upstairs was very heavy on his feet. We called him stomping Tom. Thankfully, it was only for a couple of hours."

"Schöner geht nicht mehr!!! Bitte probiert und bucht es … man kann es nicht beschreiben, so schön ist es dort! Abends den Sonnenuntergang von der Terrasse aus genießen und morgens im Bett liegen und den Sonnenaufgang sehen, das ist schon wundervoll genug. Aber der gesamte Komfort auf dem Hausboot, der Ofen am Abend , die Ruhe auf dem Wasser, in meinen Augen geht es nicht besser und der erholungsfaktor setzt schon nach wenigen Minuten ein. Einfach machen !!!"

"Check-in process was painless and the staff was very friendly. Room was very clean, bed was comfortable and the linens were cozy. We enjoyed having the large balcony as well. The breakfast was delicious with a lot of variety, even vegan options. The location was great, there is a nice park nextdoor and property is close to tram stop, providing quick access to Altstadt and Hauptbahnhof in a matter of minutes. It was a great value and an enjoyable stay, would recommend!"
