Spring and Summer guests will be visited daily by many humming birds who make their home on the farm. You will see a variety of red tail hawks an occasional bald eagle flying on the farm. A large heard of deer along with their new born fawns. The majestic wild turkey will let you know he is around with many morning gobbles. . At nights you will see a million stars as you sit around the rock campfire outside. WE ALSO PROVIDE ALL YOUR FIREWOOD for the campfire/ fireplace. The wood is a mix of white and red oak and some cherry mixed in. So you don’t have to worry about having to buy any! There is zero light pollution. You may even hear an occasional coyote howling in the distance. We also have cows grazing the fields munching grass. ..Note... there are no bulls ...There are steers and females only. Visitors at the end of July will find thousands of blackberries to pick.

This home is located in the heart of syrup making country! It’s approx 5 miles from McDowell and 14 miles from Monterey and will be available for to rent for the annual Highland County Sugar Maple Festival. The farm is also located approx 3 miles from the national forest. Their are many local trout streams to fish which include the calf pasture and bull pasture river. Also many smaller local native trout streams. I know where all the honey holes are for the trout..;) Or you can visit the Virginia Trout Company in Monterey for Rainbow and Brook Trout, also the Sugar Grove trophy trout ponds. There is also another native trout steam that I can tell you about , but count on it being an all day trip! The small town of McDowell has a home town grocery store (Stone Wall Grocery) they make fresh sandwiches/ home made biscuits and barbecue daily. There is also a small gas station just up the road that is famous for its fresh cinnamon buns. McDowell also has “Sugar Tree Country Store “for maple syrup lovers. Monterey also offers a wonderful dining experience at the Highland Inn. They also have a quaint restaurant called “Highs” with down home country cooking if that is your fancy.

Fall and Winter guests will wake up to brisk cool mornings with fall foliage. Our farm has a variety of Oak and Maple trees that will light up the day with amazing colors. You also will see a variety of native apple trees. Some of these trees are over 100 years old and still produce an abundance of apples. You will notice a large variety of different apple types with over 30 native trees on the property. Black Walnut trees are full of fox squirrels. There is also an old home on the farm that was built in 1916. The home is at an altitude of 2800 feet above sea level and at the top of our upper field , the altitude tops out at 3400 feet. So you will see snow! We have great hills for sledding!!!For skiers , the ski resorts of Snow Shoe and the Homestead are about an hour and a half drive from the farm. Many many things to do! But If you want complete privacy and just want to sit on the front porch with a cup of coffee, you have this as well. The farm is almost a mile off the less traveled small trail ( route 617) with a chain gate and a additional metal gate you will need to travel thru to get to the farm. Please note you should have a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get to the property in the latter part of November and into the winter. Especially December and January.

This property has been in our family since 1979. The home was built in 2005. It is a very special place for me and my family to go and recharge our batteries from hectic work weeks. We are active hikers, hunters and paint ballers! We love the outdoors and would like to share our piece of heaven with you.

This place is truly about as close to heaven as you can get. Wonderful scenery, abundance of wildlife and secluded isolation that helps you unwind from reality. As a topper this year we were able to see the aurora with no light pollution which was incredible. Highly recommend staying here, the place is cozy, the owner is awesome and is very communicative. So if you’re looking for a secluded getaway this is the one!

Relaxing Remote Escape, Beautiful Views!
A very remote escape, perfect place to relax and unwind! Very clean, well appointed with necessities. Stephen is a super responsive host. (Thank you!) The weather during our stay was mostly rainy, snowy and cold - but we enjoyed the cozy fireplace and really appreciated the provided firewood. We had one clear night and loved the star filled sky! We walked the surrounding pasture land, beautiful views. Enjoyed a meal at the High Restaurant in Monterey a half hour away - worth the trip - but note that the little shops in town close early and have patchy hours. Tip: Follow Stephen's perfect directions he provides to the cabin - NOT googlemaps- that sent us down a road that turned into an undrivable overgrown grassy path.

Peaceful retreat
We had a wonderful time getting away from DC for a few days. The property and the house were perfect for us. We did some hiking on the property, and we ventured out to some of the surrounding parks. Our only regret was that we were there during a full moon, so our stargazing was limited. But, we did get a beautiful moonrise!

NYE Getaway
My best friend and I wanted to get away from DC and Baltimore to have a quiet NYE with our pups. We wanted somewhere they could run and play without fireworks so we could cook and relax. This cabin was perfect! Very clean with a fenced in yard. There was a fire pit outside and a cozy fireplace inside. Great front porch to sit with our morning coffee to watch the sun rise and pups play. I can’t think of a better way to ring in the new year. Stephen was very helpful with directions and instructions for check in and check out. Everything was a breeze. Can’t wait to come back!

Best Place to Stay Near Doe Hill/Monterey/McDowell
We took a family vacation to show my ailing father a historic home near Doe Hill built by our ancestors. This cabin has everything you need for a comfortable stay! The pictures in the listing isn't even close to how beautiful the property is and the amazing views it has. The cabin is clean and well stocked with everything you need. We will definitely be back to bring more family out to this beautiful area. Sitting on the front porch looking at God's creation was the best!!!

Mountain Adventure
We enjoyed the quiet, peaceful location. The fireplace burned on a rainy Sunday making the wives very happy. Nothing beats bacon cooking on a dreary rainy Sunday morning. Location was perfect for our adventures in Franklin at the Treasure Mountain Festival. We picked a few beautiful apples to fry. Fire pit was fun on Saturday night. We will try to get back again. Perfect Vacation
This vacation was just what our family needed! If you’re looking for a cozy little cabin with a beautiful view of the mountains this is the best place to book. The kids loved watching all the deer, hummingbirds and feeding the cattle apples everyday. We spent the mornings and evenings relaxing at the cabin while spending the days exploring the nearby National and State Parks. Our only regret is the trip wasn’t long enough!

Our family greatly enjoyed the beauty and privacy of Seldom Seen Farm. The firepit in the backyard is the perfect spot to enjoy clear nights when the sky is illumined with millions of star. The front porch porch provides a peaceful view of the distant mountains. Watch out for Cow #77 who enjoyed rubbing against our car. Seldom Seen Farm is an excellent value.

Peace and relaxation
Our family spent a week here over the summer. Out in the true country with the most awe inspiring views. We have 2 large dogs that were welcomed here and they rate it a 1 out of 10! The cattle herd surrounded the camp fence at one ooint every day. Comfy seats on the porch and filled hummingbird feeders provided hours of entertainment. The camp had everything we needed, and then some. They truly welcomed us into their camp. Many amazing memories made. Many little spots to visit for day trips and lunch out. Planned to eat in most nights, as town is 1/2 hour away and not all restaurants open every night. But thats why we came out here. Plus the stargazing is beyond compare!

An Explorer’s Dream!
It rained for most of our trip but we just couldn’t resist getting out to explore this amazing property. So we put on our hiking/rain gear and headed out. I’m so glad we did - It’s beyond gorgeous! We encountered woods that are easy to walk through with ample wild ferns and a pretty meadow at the end of our hike. We also saw a variety of birds, lots of deer, and a few cows. It was great! The house is warm and cozy and our dog loved the fenced-in yard. We enjoyed sitting on the front porch and listening to the thunder and rain. It’s so peaceful and very secluded. Exactly what we were looking for. We had hoped to have clearer skies to see the beauty of the stars with zero light pollution but because of the rain, we’ll have to try for another time. We hope to be back soon!

Three Day Getaway
Seldom Seen Farm is the perfect place to relax and get away from it all. You won't see another person or even hear the sound of a vehicle as long as you're on the farm. I walked until I was too tired to walk any farther and never reached the end of the property. I saw tons of wildlife and cows, but nary a person. The house is sturdy and clean and has everything you need, including wifi and TV. I hope to return again.
