Our home's architecture, which uses strawbales as structural elements, is optimal for the arid southwest landscape, helping insulate the home in the winter and keep it cool in the summer. Consistent with most Colorado mountain destinations, the home does not offer air-conditioning. There is a washer/dryer in this home.

This is a mountain home on a well. Most guests prefer to bring bottled water for drinking due to the high mineral content. There is no cell service located at this property. There is a landline and WiFi calling works.

This home is appx 30 minutes to downtown Durango, 30 minutes to Vallecito Marina, and 55 minutes to Purgatory ski resort.

In winter (November through April), 4WD is required. It is NECESSARY that you have a four-wheel-drive vehicle, vehicles with medium to high clearance and winter/snow tires.  Although the roads and driveway are well-maintained, they are very steep and curvy, and will be snow packed and slick.

This home is pet friendly! We allow a maximum of 2 dogs max and the pet fee is $40/day (for a max $250 per stay).

Book at least a week and a 10% discount is automatically applied (Excludes Christmas/New Years).

Stay with us and we offer DISCOUNTS on both summer (white water rafting, horseback riding etc.) and winter (ski/snowboard rentals, sleigh rides, snowmobile tours etc.) activities.

Cancellation Policy: A non-refundable payment of $300 is required at the time of booking. This $300 payment is applied toward the total amount due and is only refundable within 72 hours of the time of the booking is made. If your arrival date is within 30 days of booking, payment in full is required at the time of booking. Cancellations or changes to stay dates, including changes that result in a shortened stay, are not permitted within 30 days of arrival, and any such changes will result in a penalty. Cancellations or changes that are made within thirty (30) days of the arrival date, forfeit the entire reservation amount while cancellations made more than thirty (30) days in advance of your arrival only forfeit the $300 payment made at the time of booking. For reservations that are at least thirty (30) nights, the cancellation policy above increases to sixty (60) days prior to the arrival date. We do offer travel insurance.

Nice place to unwind. Gret for pets.
Great location about 30 minutes from downtown Durango. easy access to trails and lakes. Very well equipped and furnished. Lovely backyard where pets can play safely at will. We really enjoyed the place and will be back for "real" (see comment below about internet) vacations. A few details that could have made the stay from Good to Great. - The internet works however is extremely slow (Speedtest : Ping 600 MS Download 9.99Mbps Upload 0.50 Mbps). this makes it ok to browse the internet casually but definitely not OK for a workcation week. Do not count on being able to do Zoom call form there. We had to go work downtown in a rented office. - On the description pictures, there is a tarp outside that give shade on the terrasse. the Tarp was not there, this is unfortunate as it could have been pleasant to be outside in the shade. - Finally, all the sink drain need cleanup. there is a very bad odor coming for mthe drains when water flows.

Great Property and location!
The property is exactly as advertised. Clean, comfortable, and beautiful area. It was a great base camp for our Durango adventures. There was an unprecedented heat wave while we were there. The owners prepared, and supplied us with fans and a large swamp cooler which made a huge difference, and kept us comfortable. I recommend this property to anyone visiting the Durango area.

Quiet Cool Cabin
We really enjoyed the cabin. It was extremely quiet and close to both Lake Lemon and Vallecito (which are awesome). The drive up to the cabin is pretty steep but ok for an SUV, truck or Subaru. Definitely bring water; as noted in other reviews the Sulphur smell is strong. The solitude of the cabin is worth the trade offs though.

There are some caveats
The strawbale house itself is eclectic in terms of decoration, but it grows on you. The furniture layout in the main room makes no sense, but I guess it somehow works. What I didn't like is that when I booked the property, there was no mention of having a 4WD vehicle with snow tires required, until I received the check-in information. Didn't matter - my X5 made it through the neighborhood just fine, even without snow tires. Had to shovel 24" of snow off the driveway, because the guy that was supposed to plow it didn't show up till 6PM, and we needed food. Good cardio workout, but it took 4 hours to clear. That said, that would not be the standard experience, as it was an act of mother nature. Cabin was clean, all standard cooking implements were there. Bed was comfortable. Also, the TV has subscriptions to all streaming services I can imagine.

Autumn break
We enjoyed our time at this cabin. It’s depicted accurately and is clean and comfortable. Is located about 20-30 minutes away from Durango. Main negative is the well water has a strong sulfur odor more than taste. We chose to purchase all our drinking water to be on the safe side. Wifi service occasionally quite slow or may even drop, but most of the time worked well. It’s well equipped and overall met our expectations and needs.

Decent Stay
The property itself is fine. The pictures make it seem that the land dimensions are larger than reality. The interior is great. Recommend staging it with fresh keurig pods before every visit since it is quite a ways to the store. The largest issue we had was the sulfur smell from the water. There seems to be something very wrong going on with the rotten egg / sulfur smell. There's ways to mitigate this and I recommend the owners invest in this mitigation so that future guests don't have to deal with smelling that every time they run water. In the mean time, staging each visit with a case of bottled water would be great until they get the smell under control. Other than that, great visit.

Very nice, peaceful cabin
This is a very nice, quiet cabin in the woods. It was immaculately clean and well stocked. We enjoyed our stay very much. The only suggestion I have for future guests is that you might want to bring bottled water to drink and cook from as the well water has a sulphur smell. This is easily dealt with and otherwise a great cabin close to Lemon and Vallecito lake, hiking and Durango.

It’s what we were looking for
The house was well kept and comfortable. The green energy design and solar heating worked great for us in mid May. We wanted a rental in Aspen Trails for its location close to Lemon Reservoir, Vallecito, and Durango. We also used it as a base to drive the Million Dollar highway to Black Canyon of the Gunnison and Mesa Verde National Parks. We will rent this one again.

No electricity on arrival at 4 PM Christmas Eve
We arrived at 4 PM Christmas Eve as instructed. Renting for 8 nights. Had to shovel over 2 ft snow away from front door to enter cabin. No electricity in cabin. No way to communicate with anyone and too late to get back on the road in darkness and blowing snow. We were able to find 2 candles and small battery operated light source. We did have couple of flashlights that we brought. No working heat source in this cabin for emergency situations. No light source for emergency situations, no communication with outside world. Not even a lantern available. Very long night. My spouse is a retired Firefighter and myself a retired Nurse. Electricity came back on early morning around 5 AM and then off again at 9AM. Did notify VRBO (which I was told she could not find or reservation and she could not hear me well) and VRC when electricity came on and went back off. We headed back to Texas. Where are we going to go Christmas day ? We were refunded but at first they actually wanted us to pay for the night spent with no electricity, cleaning fee ,etc. We had no choice but to return home. Drove home Christmas day.

Nice homey Cabin in the woods
The cabin met or exceeded our expectations. It was very homey and comfortable for the 3 of us. Four would be fine too. Everything worked and the place was very clean. The kitchen was excellent. We did not need 4x4 to get in, though you likely would if there was snow. FWIW There's a shortcut to the San Juan River fishing area. We loved Durango, which is about 20 min away. We rode the train to Silverton, visited Mesa Verde NP and sat in the hot springs in Ouray. A great time for us!

Durango hunt adventure
The house is actually nicer than the photos. There’s a difficult hike up to a ridge right from the house into the National Forest. I witnessed one of the most beautiful sunrises I’ve ever seen. The house is located away from the city, but close enough to everything. I spent most of my time towards Bayfield. Tequilas and Bottom Shelf Brewery are both great. You must have 4WD in the winter as the road to the house gets very icy. The showers are plumbed backwards so it took a minute to figure out. Beds are very comfortable. We had everything we needed except groceries and water. Make sure to bring drinking water as the well water isn’t pleasant. I really liked the construction and technology of the Haybale house. Thanks for the stay

The location is high up away from noise and so peaceful. Easy drive to Durango or out to the reservoirs. The well water was unfamiliar so we bought bottled water to drink, cook, and brush teeth. The master bed felt like a memory foam mattress. Great communication with host. Very relaxing getaway.
