Marvel at the features and highlights of Eskbank House and Museum. Imagine living here many years ago and learn about the lives of its previous occupants.

A historic home built in 1842, Eskbank House Museum showcases fascinating collections from the days of early settlement. Wander through the house to admire magnificent furniture and local artworks. It’s easy to spend many hours here, with a picnic area and attractions to suit all ages, along with regular events throughout the year.

First opened to the public in 1966, the Georgian-style Eskbank House is the estate’s highlight. The sandstone building retains four front rooms that look much as they did when Alexander Binning built the house for Thomas Brown. See the early Victorian-era furniture and picture yourself lounging in the elegant surroundings of the past. The Bracey Furniture Collection is among the most extravagant.

One of the most popular displays is the Lithgow Pottery collection, with pieces sourced from as early as 1879. Pottery in the region was once made for practical purposes now, the rare pieces are a collector’s dream. Study the photos of early Lithgow and see memorabilia, including housewares and saddlery tools. The Courtyard Gallery features revolving art exhibitions. Check the schedule for exhibits that showcase the creative works of locals, including competitions for primary and secondary schools, with award-winning pieces on display.

Leave plenty of time to explore the gardens. You’ll see a stone stable and a coach house, along with a blacksmith area. Take a photo of the hexagonal stone garden shed. When it’s time for a break, settle in at the picnic area to eat within the scenic surroundings. If you’d like to know more about the collections, displays and history of the area, book a tour with volunteer guides.

For more history about Lithgow, visit the nearby Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum, where production of weaponry and non-military items began in 1912. The museum features military rifles and machine guns from across the world, along with displays depicting Australia’s history at the production facility.

Eskbank House Museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday each week as well as ANZAC Day. Pay a fee for entry. Park your car for free in the parking lot on the grounds.
