Home to the Nakdonggang Bird Sanctuary, this wetland in the middle of the river is at its liveliest in winter when flocks of feathered visitors fly in.
There are literally over a hundred thousand reasons to visit Eulsukdo Island, because that’s how many birds this island attracts each year. Get all your information at the Nakdong Estuary Eco-Center before heading outside with your binoculars in hand.
Eulsukdo Island is a small delta island in the Nakdong River, close to where it meets the South Sea near Busan. Apart from the wetlands and its eco-center, the island is home to a walking trail, picnic grounds and a small botanical garden. Enjoy your little escape from the busy streets of Busan City and take your time exploring it all.
The migratory bird preservation period runs from November to March, which is when the herons, snipes, geese and ducks make their way here. Special species to see here include black-faced spoon bills and white-naped cranes. Waterfowl and shorebirds also visit in spring. With over 150 species visiting here regularly, you may want to bring a notepad to record the kinds you spot. And don’t forget to scan the skies for soaring eagles and other birds of prey.
Eulsukdo Island is located in Nakdongnam-ro, in the district of Saha in Busan Province. It’s less than a half-hour ride from Gimhae International Airport by taxi. If you are driving yourself, head for the Eulsukdo Public Parking Lot. Parking by the Nakdong Estuary Eco-Center is available for a small fee and the center usually stays open until the mid evening. Buses from downtown Busan also stop nearby, at the at Eulsukdo Rest Stop.
If you are a very keen birder, or a twitcher or ornithologists even, you can also pay for a boat trip from the harbor in Myeongji-dong to explore the wetlands around this special little island with a local guide. Be aware that access is restricted at certain times of year.
