Dedication bricks in the park below the mural. Don Rentz is my grandfather. He fought to liberate the Philippines from Japan during WWII. Family run ice cream shop still going strong after 70+ years! They also make their own chocolates - the chocolate-covered cherries are the real deal. This location on Tiffin Ave is open till 9:30 every day but Sunday, when they close at 9. Home of the Oilers - four-time NAIA Division II National Football Champions. Wed night classic car cruise-ins during the summer. Bring your own food though - that sign reads Classic, not Classy! Historic campus building dating to 1886. Cost ~$50,000 to build - a bargain considering classes are still taught here 125 years later.
Interesting note: The bell tower was originally two stories taller, but was deemed unstable and lowered in 1912. Once upon a time here sat the largest gas well in world. The Great Karg Well was drilled in 1886, and overnight Findlay became an industrial boomtown. This single well produced 12,000,000 cubic feet (340,000 cubic meters) of gas per day, and when lit it burned with a flame 100ft high and was visible more than 30 miles away.
At that time gas was simply a by-product of oil drilling, and with no way to store it they ended up piping it away for free to heat homes and drive industrial machinery. The primary benefactor was the glass industry, in which gas was the major expense, and glass companies relocated here from around the world. Eventually, though, the gas ran out, and within a decade the feverish pitch had ground to a trickle.
#thisismyhometown Best coffee in town, and a used book store to boot. Local business done right. Across from the university at George St. Perennial Ohio State Fair winning ribs. Ben Roethlisberger is known to frequent this casual diner - he grew up in Findlay and played for Findlay High. He's also had Tony's cater private parties in Pittsburg.
All in all the ribs are pretty tasty, especially for Ohio, and they have a great salad and dessert bar. Worth a stop if you are passing through. Just off Interstate 75. A decent place to grab a meal. Sports bar feel and food to match. The chicken strips are popular, though $10 specialty pizzas on Thursday nights are hard to pass up. You can count on Bob Evans for consistently good breakfasts throughout the midwest. No comparison with Denny's, IHOP or Waffle House. Their buttermilk biscuits are particularly nice - flaky on the outside and chewy inside. Best with honey. Tastiest pizza in town. Not your typical pie though - thin crust, sweet tomato sauce, and perhaps a bit too much salt. Could take some getting used-to, but worth the effort. Square pieces only add to the fun. Eat in or get it to go. If you're after a good, no-nonsense burger at throw-back prices, Keith's is the spot. This hamburger stand operates primarily as a drive-thru, though there is a walk-up window and you'll find a couple of picnic tables out front. The patties taste better than the standard fast-food chain patties and their Frosty-like malts hit the spot. Here in Findlay the primary competition is Wilson's, but with it's recent decline Keith's is now on top. Neighborhood bar and grill. Pretty basic pub fare, but the waitresses are friendly. No smoking here, so it's a better bet than the Walnut if you care about your health. Midwest hamburger chain, a notch above your standard fast food. I'm still unclear what's unique about a ButterBurger, but it was fairly tasty and the veggie toppings were fresh. Fried cheese curds are a fun side. I wasn't impressed with the frozen custard though - the grainy texture was distracting. Neighborhood dive bar. Smoking tolerated (despite state laws) but you need to bring your own Great steaks and a cozy country atmosphere at this locally owned chain. This is our go-to spot in town for a quality dining experience. Only six locations in Northwest Ohio, so the entrees are fresh and the service is friendly - a notch or two above your typical nationwide steakhouse dinner.
