One of the largest cities on Ireland’s western seaboard, Galway City Centre is renowned for its welcoming and lively atmosphere. Visit brightly painted pubs to chat with locals, explore historic attractions and shop for handcrafted souvenirs.

Start at the Galway City Museum to learn about regional history. Notice the iconic Galway Hooker fishing boats with three red sails, along with artifacts recovered from the River Corrib. At the Claddagh Ring Museum, shop for jewelry and discover the history of Claddagh marriage and friendship rings.

Step back in time at historical sites across the city. On Nun’s Island, Galway Cathedral is unmissable on the skyline with its massive octagonal dome. The Galway Fisheries Watchtower Museum is located in a building dating from the 1850s and houses memorabilia from fishing history. One of the most popular spots for photos is the Spanish Arch. Built in 1584, it rests on the river’s left bank in the Latin Quarter.

In the heart of the city is Eyre Square, where markets took place in medieval times. Today it’s a gathering place for locals and tourists, with a playground and seasonal markets. For market shopping year-round, come to the Saturday Galway Market, which takes place between Market Street and Shop Street.

Purchase more souvenirs in the Latin Quarter. It’s home to Kirwan’s Lane, named after one of the tribes that ruled the town for centuries and known for its medieval heritage, unique shops and restaurants. Find Irish pubs, music and culture along Quay Street, a pedestrianized stretch with varied attractions. Book tickets to a show at the Druid Theatre or the Town Hall Theatre the latter features a 400-seat main auditorium for concerts, musicals and films.

Fly to Ireland West Airport in Knock to get to Galway City Centre, about a 60-minute drive away. From Dublin Airport, the city is approximately 2.5 hours by car. Explore the city center easily on foot, with many attractions within walking distance of hotels. Buses, taxis and ferries are readily available to travel farther afield.
