The cobblestone street of Gstattengasse meanders through Salzburg’s UNESCO-listed Old Town, at the foot of the dramatic cliffs of Mönchsberg mountain. By day Gstattengasse is a place to admire the delightful architectural and natural landscape of Salzburg. Step inside a 300-year-old church and ride a lift to a panoramic viewpoint. Visit Gstattengasse after dark to party at pubs and nightclubs.
Mansions painted in soft hues line the street and contrast perfectly with the sombre grey color of the cliffs that rise above them. Some houses date back to the 1400s and have been used as everything from bakeries to breweries and hatters workshops. Marvel at the ornate baroque facade and elaborate interior paintings of St. Mark’s Church. A statue of Mozart by Markus Lüpertz faces the church entrance.
At the midway point along the street the Mönchsberg Lift provides access to Mönchsberg mountain in July and August. In just 30 seconds you’ll be stepping out onto a viewing terrace set at 1,591 feet (485 meters). Gaze over the baroque rooftops of the Old Town and across the Salzach river toward snow-capped mountains. Spot major landmarks such as Salzburg Castle and Fortress Hohensalzburg.
Dedicate time to perusing the exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art Salzburg Mönchsberg. Spread over four levels are works by international artists from the 19th to 21st centuries. Access the museum by foot, car and public bus when the lift is not operating.
As night falls, bars open and the scene shifts to a fun-loving party environment. Hop between a boisterous Irish-themed pub, casual cocktail joints and refined wine bars. Nightclubs keep the entertainment alive well into the early hours. Join the crowds at kebab shops before returning to your accommodation.
Find Gstattengasse on the west side of Salzburg’s Old Town. It’s a 10-minute walk from Salzburg Mülln-Altstadt train station and public buses stop nearby. Other popular attractions in the Old Town include Mozart’s Birthplace and Salzburg Museum.
