You don't have to limit your tour to the points of interest in Kirishima because the whole region is laced with a wealth of great things to do and see. Satsuma and Kanoya are two more places worth checking out while you're in Miyazaki.
Around 16 miles (26 kilometers) to the southwest of Kirishima is Kagoshima, a regional city where you can visit Kagoshima Arena, Kagoshima City Museum of Art and Kagoshima Botanical Garden. Kagoshima City Aquarium, Mount Sakurajima and Kirishima-Yaku National Park are other good spots to visit.
Many travelers agree that one of the most meaningful compliments you can make to a region's people is to make the effort of learning a few common words and phrases. "Isshoni odorimasenka?" ("Would you like to dance with me?") is useful. And, for "Where's the toilet?", you can say "Benjo wa doko desu ka?" Don't be shy, just give it a spin!
Don't forget, if you are likely to be in Kirishima around the 23rd of December, Birthday of Emperor Akihito is widely celebrated at that time and many businesses may have changed opening hours.
When it's time to leave this special place, say a fond Sayōnara (farewell) to the characters you have met and the spots you've enjoyed.
