Josselin (Morbihan). Prieuré Saint-Martin. La façade sud de l'église. A l'origine, l'église du prieuré est sur un plan bénédictin, c'est à dire sur le modèle de la croix latine. De l'édifice roman, il ne reste que le chevet incomplet et une partie du transept. Aux XVIe et XVIIe siècles, l'abside en hémicycle est transformée en chevet polygonnal. A la fin du XVIIIe siècle, la nef et détruite et remplacée par une chapelle. Au XIXe siècle, on diminue la hauteur de l'abside et on élève la façade sud. Les bâtiments du prieuré étaient à l'ouest de l'église. Ils comprenaient un manoir avec une rabine (une allée) sur le devant, des écuries, des jardins et un colombier. L'église du prieuré deviendra église paroissiale en 1400. Plus tard, à la fin du XVIe siècle, elle servira au culte protestant. Le prieuré de Saint-Martin, fondé par Josselin II de Porhoët en 1105*, dépendait de l'abbaye bénédictine de Marmoutier de Tours. Josselin II ou Josthon, vicomte de Porhoët fonda la prieuré Saint-Martin en 1105 dans la ville de Josselin qui porte son nom. L'acte de fondation nous dit qu'il était fils du vicomte Eudon, etc... (Si quis, plenius scire voluerit qualiter Joscelinus vicecomes, filius illustrisimi vicecomitis Eudonis, dederit, etc.). Il meurt vers 1110, peu de temps après cette fondation, c'est son frère Geoffroy qui lui succéda. Le réseau prieural de l'abbaye tourangelle de Marmoutier était considérable. L'abbaye Saint-Martin de Marmoutier a installé ses dépendances par centaines principalement sur un grand quart nord-ouest de la France. Dans le duché de Bretagne, il y avait une trentaine de ces prieurés dépendants de Marmoutier. Marmoutier saura développer un vaste système d'alliance, à intérêts réciproques, avec l'aristocratie, "l'amicitia"* (l'amitié). Suivra une donation, en 1108, au prieuré Saint-Martin, d'une partie de l'église Notre-Dame de Josselin qui était revenue entre les mains de Josselin II.
