Hiking and cycling routes connect with Viking relics, coastal towns and artsy islands set around this fjord between the Kattegat and North Sea.

The Limfjord strait separates North Jutland from the remainder of the Jutland Peninsula. Its series of fjords, inlets, islands and lagoons have been used since the Viking era. Tour the many marinas, towns and islands encompassed by the breathtaking natural scenery of the Limfjord. Delight in endless miles of scenic trails, sample delicious seafood and visit museums and age-old landmarks.

If you like to walk, bike and be in the water then Limfjord is a great place to visit. Hike beneath the Knuden cliffs on Fur island and discover models of the solar system on Lemvig’s Planetary Path. Cycle along waterfronts and pass lush countryside, stately homes and monasteries on the 379-mile (610-kilometer) long Limfjord Cycling Route. Glyngøre, Hjarbæk Fjord, Skive Fjord and Venø are among several great kitesurfing and windsurfing spots.

Watch history come to life at museums such as Spøttrup Medieval Museum, where battle reenactments take place inside a centuries-old castle. Dueholm Convent has exhibitions of everything from Viking swords to glassware and antique toys. Thyborøn’s Sea War Museum recounts the events of the Battle of Jutland. Browse the galleries and workshops of Fur, whose artists decorate the town in summer with painted fish.

Schedule a trip to fjord-side Aalborg, North Jutland’s biggest city. Algade street is home to historic landmarks, including Budolfi Cathedral and Gråbrødre Kloster. Enjoy entertainment at the bars on Jomfru Ane Gade. Across the water, the almost 700 graves of Lindholm Høje make up Scandinavia’s best-preserved Viking burial site.

Freshly caught seafood is a staple of the local diet and celebrated during October’s region-wide Oyster Week and September’s Crab Festival at Lemvig Harbour. Catch your own oysters on fishing trips departing from Handbjerg Marina. Learn about the shellfish industry and take cooking classes at the Danish Shellfish Center, on Mors island.

Arrive in the Limfjord region by public trains and buses from international airports located in Aalborg, Aarhus and Billund. Come in summer for long, sun-drenched days and winter for mystical snow-covered landscapes.
