Just south of Madalena on Pico Island is the Criação Velha wine region. We turned off the main road onto a narrow road with dry basalt stone walls guarding vines on either side. It led out to the coastline where old lava patches meet the ocean and overlook Faial Island. The late afternoon sun rays made the landscape glisten and I had a strong urge to work on a (my own?!) vineyard here some day.

Similar to a few other areas of the island, the land is divided up into small rectangular plots by piles of volcanic rock (basalt). It's a centuries-old practice to protect the vines from the strong ocean winds and salt water spray as well as warm the grapes.

"We had the lower level of the house, and it was very spacious. The balcony is huge overlooking farm fields and over the ocean, a clear visual of Pico. I would highly recommend anyone coming to the island is to stay at this place. "Lovely small hotel, the staff couldnt have been more friendly or helpful. The rooms are lovely and the location is excellent. We stayed here the night before climbing Pico and we were allowed to leave our bags and come back to the hotel the following day. They went out of their way to make our stay perfect. It was one of our groups birthday whilst we stayed here and they made her feel very special. The sea is closeby if you want a swim and lots of lovely restaurants. The spa is excellent also. Thank you for having us, hopefully we will be back one day. "
