"Nice hotel"
Nice hotel. Nice welcome. Spacious grounds with plenty of options for catching the sun. Breakfast is fantastic. The waterfront area unfortunately looks pretty grim with the concrete blocks as sea defence. A shame because it could have been done much more nicely. That said the general scenery in the area is beautiful. The staff in the restaurant on the lower deck could have some more awareness of people waiting to be served etc and the corridors can be noisy with loud conversations from the maids and room service so not necessarily a place for a lie-in. The indoor pool is great for relaxing and the view of the cruise ships is fab! The hotel hosted an older crowd when I was there so nice and peaceful in the evenings. Very close to Funchal and hilly for cycling! Stunning sunsets if anyone into running along the coast.

"Nice hotel with mature clientele"
Stayed for two nights for a friend's wedding, added one more due to flight cancellation (Madeira is notorious for those). Modern, clean hotel, very friendly and professional staff, good breakfast and dinner buffet. Great gym. Did not sample the pool but it looked clean and inviting. The hotel does cater to a more mature clientele, think panic buttons in showers and bed rooms. The bathrooms do have a "upscale hospital" feel to them. Overall, absolutely good value for money, probably even more so with full board options. Much appreciated the staff's flexibility, allowing us to rebook rooms when our flight was cancelled at very short notice, again, seems to be a common occurrence on Madeira.

"Stunning"
Wow is a word that falls too easily from our lips, but we were well and truly wowed by Porto Mare. From our wonderful welcome, that included a beautifully prepared room in honur of our wedding anniversary to our final swim in thw warm indoor/outdoor pool, we felt respected and honoured as guests. All the staff were incredibly friendly, inlcuding the housekeeping team who always stopped what they were doing to exchange greetings. The dinning staff were exceptional, especially Suse - the smiling one, who made each meal time very special. The food was wonderful in all the restaurants and the manager of The Med made it fun to be there. The grounds are just so very relaxing, for such a big complex. We want to try and find the same pillows in the UK as they were fantastic to sleep on.

"Quiet restful hotel"
stayed with pensioner mother and wanted a quiet place with easy access to shower etc. The room was ground floor garden studio, with shower grab rails and alarm cord fitted. The nights could be a little chilly, but extra duvet and blankets were already in the room although I didn't use them. The evenings, despite there being entertainment at the far end of the complex, couldn't be heard in our rooms, so a good sleep each night. All the staff less one receptionist were exceptionally polite and helpful. (the other 3 reception staff were excellent.) The outdoor pool (1st week Feb), was a bit nippy but bearable, and the gardens lovely to walk in. The indoor pool wasn't very easy to access by an elderly person with stiff joints and the entrance to the spa is down very steep steps and a slippery sloping floor towards the pool area, so not suitable for those with restricted balance or mobility. The hotel has a free shuttle bus twice daily into Funchal to a central location.

"Excellent hotel."
Staff excellent as were public areas, reception staff were very helpful indeed. The public areas shone and were very festive and luxurious making you feel you were indeed on holiday. The indoor pool was lovely as it was mid December we had it to ourselves. Our room was clean and comfortable even though we were overlooking the car park. As the hotel was only 5% full it might have been prudent to put us overlooking the sea to encourage a return. We did think that the room decor needed a slight up date with paint scuffed off the walls in places and the carpet looking "used" . Unfortunately the breakfast was not up to standard. The meat on the cold table was of cheap cuts and mostly reconstituted. We were not given a menu the first day but were asked if we wanted an omelette. It was duly ordered as ham and cheese.......the ham was mushy reconstituted and very like spam. The second day we ordered from the menu, crispy bacon, scrambled egg mushrooms and tomatoe. We got an omelette with reconstituted ham, mushrooms and cheese. The breakfast fruit had been left overnight and the pears were going brown and the small individual fruit salads contained suspect grapes and were swimming in juice. Not what should be expected from a 4 star hotel where everything else was so good.

"A genuine 5* hotel"
The Vidamar more than met expectation. We knew the location was good---i.e. walking distance into old town of Funchal -- as we have stayed in this area before. However, the Vidamar, was by far a superior hotel. We were welcomed warmly by staff, and that set the trend for the week. The food was exceptional, with so much to choose from. The main buffet restaurant, was well organised with dishes being refiled continuously, and the other optional restaurants we used were very good too. We particularly enjoyed the Portuguese restaurant, where entertainment is also provided. There is entertainment in the bar nightly which is very popular , and the prices of drinks are reasonable. We noticed several guests wearing wrist bands , so we assume hotel offers all inclusive. Pools are well maintained, attendants on hand at all times. Huge bedrooms, more like suites, and soundproofing in bedrooms excellent. No noise from outside!! It was a special birthday for my husband , and the hotel surprised us with a birthday cake and champagne in our room. It would be very difficult to find fault with this hotel, my only disappointment was that some guests wore shorts/ flipflops/ tshirts in the dining room,in the evening, which detracted from the 5* rating.. The hotel should insist on a dress code for evenings.

"AMAZING - FOR A QUIET HOLIDAY"
The hotel is beautiful. The area is very quiet so Id recommend a car. Wouldn't recommend hotel for kids as the hotel tends to lend itself to adults with adult only restricted areas (great for those with no children). There is a child friendly hotel (Savoy Calheta) down the road but I feel the area is too quiet to keep the kids entertained so would recommend Funchal. The Alambique hotel restaurant is A la Carte but the food is not that great, I think it more style over content. We found a restaurant called New Era on the marina which has home cooked food and really well priced. There is a supermarket down the road-you can buy almost everything you need here so travel light. We used Suntrust Cars to transfer from the airport to the hotel and they were amazing. If you like spa facilities pay the cost to use it, it won't be a waste of money its fantastic. I booked a head massage which was ok but not that relaxing as it is done sat in a chair, the spa is lovely though. Id recommend going to the Fly Bar on the 7th floor it has amazing views and they sure know how to make your evening special. Breakfast is fantastic and its true every morning you can pour yourself a bucks fizz. The rooms are all lovely but pay for a sea view-well worth it. There is a hairdryer, shampoo, body lotion, shower cap, a kettle (no cotton buds, cotton wool so take your own). There is no sand beach but massive rocks that the sea crashes against.
