We stayed on a floor being renovated. Half the breakfast was missing.

I almost hesitate to give this a five-star review, because I don’t want the secret to get out – this is the best place to stay in Houghton! Our son is a student at MTU, so we are in the area numerous times a year. We have stayed at various other properties (both Airbnb’s and other hotels), but Independence Stay has become our go-to spot. The property is always immaculately clean, modern, and well-maintained. The staff is friendly. The rooms are comfortable, with just enough kitchen supplies to prepare simple meals. One thing to note ahead of time is that there is no elevator, so if you are on the second floor, you will need to take the stairs. Obviously not a deal-breaker for us, so we’ll be back the next time we’re in Houghton.

The patio area was nice to sit at and enjoy a fire. There are plenty of wooded areas for privacy and dog walking. We enjoyed the clean, comfortable cabin. Our only negative was the sink situation was awkward as far as size of sink and faucet and lighting.
