History enthusiasts should consider booking a room in Merida Old Town, which boasts dozens of interesting buildings from different periods of the city's long history. The area's most impressive attractions include Teatro Romano and the Temple of Diana, both built in the first century BC. Staying in the north part of the city center puts visitors close to the Acueducto de Los Milagros, an impressive structure with 38 arched pillars. Alternatively, finding a room in the southern part of the city center ensures close proximity to Casa del Mitreo, the ruins of a Roman villa that date back to the first century.

Virtually all of Merida's bars and nightclubs are within walking distance from Merida Old Town. The best place to stay to be near the city's nightlife, however, is near Plaza de Espana. Most of the city's venues are casual affairs, with party enthusiasts generally taking things as they come, rather than planning their nights. Just like the city's nightlife, the dining options are concentrated in Merida Old Town, with plenty of eateries serving a regional favorite-tapas.

Staying in Merida Old Town puts visitors near the Basilica of Santa Eulalia. The Romanesque monument features Visigothic and Gothic-style chapels. Just to the southwest, the Metropolitan Co-cathedral of Saint Mary Major of Merida features 18th century architecture, complete with a bell tower that contains a 16th century music box. The nearby Temple of Diana was built in the first century and despite what its name suggests is dedicated to Emperor Augustus.
