The best area to stay in Samburu is within the Samburu National Reserve itself, particularly along the banks of the Ewaso Ng'iro River.Staying inside the Reserve offers unparalleled wildlife viewing opportunities directly from your accommodation. The Ewaso Ng'iro River is a key water source, attracting a high concentration of animals, especially during dry seasons. Many lodges are strategically located to offer views of the river and its frequent visitors. This area is ideal for travelers who prioritize immediate access to wildlife and a truly immersive safari experience. For couples seeking an exclusive and romantic safari, lodges within a private conservancy bordering the National Reserve are an excellent choice. These conservancies often provide a more intimate experience with fewer vehicles and opportunities for activities like walking safaris or night drives, which are typically restricted within the main Reserve.

The best time to visit Samburu is during the dry seasons, which run from January to March and July to October. During these months, the weather is consistently sunny and dry, making it ideal for wildlife viewing. For wildlife enthusiasts, the dry seasons are particularly advantageous because animals gather around permanent water sources like the Ewaso Ng'iro River. This concentration makes it easier to spot various species, including elephants, lions, leopards, and the "Samburu Special Five" (Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and gerenuk). The vegetation is also sparser, offering clearer lines of sight.Couples looking for a more comfortable and predictable safari experience will appreciate the stable weather conditions during these periods. The roads within the reserve are generally in better condition, ensuring smoother game drives.
