Learn about the Joseon Dynasty through the various ornate palaces and museums of a district filled with stunning gardens and elegant art galleries.

To find the historic center of Seoul, visit Jongno, a district filled with signs of the past. It contains many of the city’s political and cultural hubs, as well as long-standing palaces and shrines. Wander past the district’s many monuments to piece together the history of the former capital city of the Joseon Dynasty.

Get oriented and meet friends at the gathering point of Gwanghwamun plaza. Study its impressive statues of Admiral Yi Sun-sin and Sejong the Great. Festivals and political events often take place in this central square. Adjacent, visit the extravagant Gyeongbokgung Palace, which dates back to the 14th century and is today one of the highlights of Korea. Take a free guided tour in English and watch the Changing of the Guard ceremony.

Another favorite is the Changdeok Palace, where many of the kings from the Joseon Dynasty resided. Wander through picturesque grounds and admire its myriad fountains and pavilions. Find out about the traditional costumes and customs of the Joseon Dynasty in the Unhyeongung, which explains the history of the elite classes between the 14th and 19th centuries.

Visit the Jongmyo Shrine for the tombs of the royal family and enter the Jogyesa Temple, one of Korea’s most significant religious buildings.

Trace the nation’s rich history in the exhibits of the Gyeonghuigung Palace and the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History. The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul provides a sense of the local art scene, while the Kyung-In Museum of Fine Art has a traditional teahouse alongside a gallery lined with elegant pieces.

Find the district stretching from the center to the northern reaches of Seoul, before delving into Bukhansan National Park. It is sandwiched between the districts of Jeongneung-dong, Bukhan-dong and Yeokchon-dong. Ride the metro to the Gyeongbukgong, Jongno 3-ga or Anguk stations and get around the area by taxi. Travel south for Jung-gu, Itaewon-dong and Yongsan-gu.
