Explore the heart of Sorrento, a smart and attractive place with cobbled lanes, historical buildings, beaches, upmarket shops and a cavernous gorge.

Sorrento City Centre is the clifftop coastal city's main hub, a compact place of winding ancient streets, lemon and orange groves, pastel-colored buildings and attractive and lively piazzas. There is much to do and lots to see while visiting Sorrento City Centre. Wind your way through the old town, explore museums, sunbathe on a beach and drink a delicious glass of limoncello liqueur.

In the heart of the city center is Piazza Tasso, the main square. It's bordered by cafés and restaurants and has a statue of St. Antonino Abbate, the patron saint of Sorrento. Stop here for a while to relax with a drink and watch the world go by. Tucked into a little corner of the piazza is a small garden with a statue of Torquato Tasso, a 16th-century renaissance poet after whom the square is named.

Piazza Tasso is built over a gorge, a cavernous space that can be seen at the Deep Valley of the Mills, about a block away from the square. Look down into the ravine at the plant-covered remains of old flour mills. To see the ruins in more detail bring a pair of binoculars with you.

Walk over to and along Corso Italia, Sorrento’s main shopping street. It is also home to Sorrento Cathedral, a 15th-century Romanesque building dedicated to Saints Philip and James. From here, navigate the attractive mix of narrow pedestrianized streets that are lined with shops selling lacework, inlaid wood furniture and the lemon products the city is known for.

Then walk down the ancient stone wall-lined path that zigzags its way down to Marina Grande, an historic harbor. Have lunch in one of the seafood restaurants while looking over at the small fishing fleet and after your meal, fall into a doze while relaxing on the beach.

Get around to the city center’s other sights including the Museo Correale di Terranova art and archeological museum. In I Giardini di Cataldo, wander through this small park's lemon grove and savor a glass of limoncello in its rustic shop.

Sorrento City Centre is easily walkable, but you can also travel around by bus.
