St. Columb\'s Cathedral featuring heritage elements, heritage architecture and a church or cathedral

Marvel at stunning artworks and stained-glass windows and explore the serene grounds of this historic cathedral that belongs to the Church of Ireland.

St. Columb’s Cathedral is a significant religious site of Planter Gothic design that dates back to the 17th century. It is among the oldest buildings in the city and contains many fascinating relics. Inspect the church’s vast collection of treasures and artifacts from battles over the centuries.

Gaze up at the tower and the church’s façade, which are part of the original structure designed by architect William Parrot in 1633. The pointed spire was added to the building in 1821.

Browse the many intriguing relics dotted around the cathedral. See regimental flags, shrines and stained-glass windows that portray parables from the Bible. On the porch, find the foundation stone that was placed in the 12th century. It has an inscription that praises the church.

Hear the ringing of the eight bells that King Charles I presented in 1614. The bells form the oldest set in Ireland. Take a guided tour of the church to understand the full context behind its artifacts. Among the highlights are documents from the Siege of Derry in 1689, when the city was under attack from a Jacobite army. Admire the portraits of William of Orange and spot the original keys to the city.

Encounter the exhibit of replicas of the Book of Kells, which contains four Gospels of the New Testament.

Learn about the famous religious figures from the region via informative plaques and displays. These people include acclaimed hymn writer Cecil Francis Alexander and philosopher George Berkeley.

The church is dedicated to Saint Columba, who played a large role in the spreading of Christianity to Ireland, Scotland and parts of England. Learn about the site’s intriguing history, after being damaged in an explosion and affected by the Nine Years’ War.

There is no charge to enter the church; however, a donation is suggested. The cathedral opens daily from morning until late afternoon. The guided tours have a fee and should be booked in advance.

St. Columb’s Cathedral is in the center of the walled city of Derry. Walk just one block south of the Diamond, which has unobstructed views of the walls.
