The NBA All-Star game was being played in the city, and statewide events had filled hotels north of town. But I happened to call the Courtyard by Marriott and get the proprietor, who asked me to wait a moment, then came back on the line to say he had a room for me. As it turns out, his hotel was completing remodeling and he had one room that was about to open -- and so he opened it, and discounted the price without prompting. He really could have charged full price; the cosmetic issues were minuscule.
