Disappointing hotel in a fantastic destination
Mauritius itself is an easy 10/10. It's a beautiful island with amazing beaches, friendly people and plenty to see. We'd definitely return to Mauritius—but we wouldn't stay at Sugar Beach again.
The hotel has a great location on Flic en Flac beach, which is stunning, and the Buddha-Bar is excellent. The staff were always friendly and polite, but it's clear many of them haven't been properly trained (incompetent) and the overall service lets the hotel down badly. Thats mainly the reception staff and the main buffet.
There was very little organisation at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Tables weren't cleared promptly, so guests were left waiting while dirty tables sat empty. Pool and beach service was incredibly slow—it takes ages just to place an order and even longer for food or drinks to arrive. Waiting over an hour for a drink is unacceptable for a 5 star hotel... Many facilities are fully booked throughout our stay despite seeming empty, making it difficult to enjoy everything the resort offers.
There were also lots of small frustrations that added up. There were no glasses available for breakfast drinks on several occasions, reception struggled with simple requests like arranging a taxi, and we were charged €20 for a photo without this being made clear beforehand... not the money thats the issue but the principle, imagine if we got one every night.
