It is situated in the valley of the Tawang River, near the small town of the same name in the northwestern part of Arunachal Pradesh, in close proximity to the Tibetan and Bhutanese border. Tawang Monastery is known in Tibetan as Galden Namgey Lhatse, which translates to "celestial paradise in a clear night." It was founded by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso in 1680-1681 in accordance with the wishes of the 5th Dalai Lama, Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso. In this image, you are observing the approach to the main courtyard of the monastery. Jili is leaning against the whitewashed wall of the principal prayer house, which enshrines a huge Buddha statue. How elegant and refined those windows are! To the left are monks’ residential buildings with their distinctive yellow roofs. ✨That graceful edifice in the distance, situated right at the entrance to the main courtyard, is where you will find butter lamps 🔥burning inside a small room on the upper level. There is also a balcony up here where one can indulge in a magnificent panoramic view overlooking Tawang.
