The Douro is a trip worth seeing in Portugal. Fantastic views and beautiful drives.
This region, which is bathed by the Douro River and is part of the so-called Douro Vinhateiro, has been producing wine for more than 2000 years, among which is the world famous Porto wine.

Its origins go back to the second half of the seventeenth century, when Port Wine began to be produced and exported in quantity, especially to England.

However, the high profits from exports to England would lead to situations of fraud, abuse and adulteration of the quality of generous wine. The main producers of wine of Douro then demand the intervention of the government and on September 10, 1756, the "General Company of Agriculture of the Vineyards of Alto Douro" is finally created.

To demarcate the physical space of the region were then ordered to implant 201 frames of granite. In the year 1761 are placed another 134 Pombaline landmarks, making a total of 335.

Already on May 10, 1907, under the decree signed by João Franco, the demarcated region is again delimited, extending to the Upper Douro.

The long tradition of viticulture has produced a cultural landscape of exceptional beauty that reflects its technological, social and economic evolution.
