Of particular interest to us were the Canadian memorials along the way. The Brooding Soldier was the most poignant memorial we came across. The imposing granite statue faces the same direction where the first German gas attack took place. 2,000 Canadian soldiers died in this area. This cemetery contains the graves of 44,292 German soldiers. The picture displays a mass grave containing 25,000 soldiers. In the background, is a sculpture of four mourning figures by Professor Emil Kreiger.
