Lake Ashi (Ashinoko) is a forest-fringed lake within the ranges of Mount Hakone. The lake was formed within Mount Hakone’s caldera, after the volcano erupted 3,000 years ago. Today, it is a pristine area dotted with small villages, lakeside resorts, pleasant walking paths and dense forests.

Hakone Shrine (Hakone Jinja) is an enchanting site in the dense forests of Moto-Hakone. Visit the famous Shinto shrine to experience its peaceful atmosphere, magnificent architecture and fascinating traditions. Atami Sun Beach is one of the main sandy waterfront spots in the region and is known for its brilliant artistic shows in the evening. Resorts and deluxe hotels skirt the rear of the stretch of sand, which is particularly wide and offers a great setting for sports and family fun. Work on your tan during your visit to Atami. The best sunbathing comes in April and May, when temperatures are hot without too rain and humidity.

Toi Beach sits on the western coast of the Izu Peninsula, a secluded region renowned for quiet villages, lavish onsens (hot springs) and dramatic coastlines. The small, former gold-mining town of Toi is home to the largest swimming area on the coast and in summer attracts many visitors for its summer festival. Since Japan’s extensive rail system doesn’t service the west coast on the peninsula, Toi Beach is a fantastic place to escape the crowds and enjoy some peace and quiet. Swim in the calm, shallow water, enjoy a long walk along the soft sand or simply admire the impressive views of Mount Fuji on the other side of Surunga Bay.

Suspended high above a forested valley is the Mishima Sky Walk (Mishima Sukaiwooku). Connecting two hillsides, Mishima Sky Walk runs for 1,312 feet (400 meters) and is Japan’s longest pedestrian bridge. Bring your camera to capture panoramic views of dramatic mountain peaks and rolling green countryside. Dabble in adventure activities, throw a good luck charm over the bridge and admire pretty flower displays.
