Atami Sun Beach is one of the main sandy waterfront spots in the region and is known for its brilliant artistic shows in the evening. Resorts and deluxe hotels skirt the rear of the stretch of sand, which is particularly wide and offers a great setting for sports and family fun. Work on your tan during your visit to Atami. The best sunbathing comes in April and May, when temperatures are hot without too rain and humidity.
Read a book in the shade of one of the tall palm trees swaying in the breeze at the back of the beach. Walk out along the small ramp or mini-pier and gaze out over the sea. The bay has a protective sea wall that marks the safe swimming area, so you can take your kids out into the water securely. Go swimming with your family and play ball games in the small waves. Admire the mural on the sea wall by Masuo Ikeda, one of Japan’s most iconic artists.
Stroll on the beachside promenade, appreciating views of both sand and sea. Arrive early to see the sunrise or stay into the evening for sunset and evening, when the beach lights up with a remarkable show.
In January, see the cherry blossoms in full bloom, painting the ground pink with their petals. Other types of cherry trees blossom in February, before the jacaranda flora turns the coast purple during the rainy season.
Visit Atami Water Park at the southern foot of the beach and see the monuments and flowerbeds of the Moon Terrace.
Atami Sun Beach is right in the heart of Atami, a 20-minute walk east from Kinomiya Station. You can also travel by bus to the stop just at the rear of the beach and get around the area on foot. Nearby sights in this part of the city include the Atami Kinomiya-jinja Shrine, the Marine Spa Atami and Atami City Hall.
