Total tranquility and exquisite scenery await you at this sheltered bay, a hike away from the confluence of the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea.

Twilight Beach is a stunning bay that draws all levels of surfers with its punchy waves. The scenic stretch of sand is in a tranquil and remote spot on Cape Reinga, encircled by enormous sand dunes and green mounds. Visit Twilight Beach for spectacular views in this serene setting, a great distance from New Zealand’s main cities.

Hike from the heart of the headland through the hilly vegetation at the back of the beach and appreciate the views of the bay from this vantage point. From the hills, enjoy the vistas of the picturesque island separated from the southern end of the strand. Trek down the slope along the Te Paki Coastal Track for the best look at the rugged coastline. At Cape Reinga’s edge, you can see the point where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean, where Māori legend says that spirits start their final journey.

Reach Twilight Beach and set up a space for your family in this secluded destination, which has very few amenities. Go for a swim in the water or join the anglers looking for their catch of the day. Watch the sun descend beyond the horizon and turn the sky a deep shade of crimson. Make sure to bring insect repellent to ward off mosquitoes.

Build a tent and settle in for the night at the Twilight Beach Campsite, sleeping beneath the stars. Enjoy the utter tranquility in this isolated spot, away from noise and light. The camp has running water from rain and plenty of space for tents.

Twilight Beach drapes the southern edge of the Cape Reinga headland, at the northern tip of New Zealand’s North Island. Drive north from Whangarei for 150 miles (240 kilometers) to get here in a few hours, passing Awanui, Waiharara and Te Kao on the way. Travel around this region to see nearby landmarks such as the Giant Sand Dunes, 90 Mile Beach and Te Werahi Beach.
