Home destroyed by Washington wildfire - 2015
Up on a hill, high above the city of Wenatchee, lies an blackened hillside, completely devastated by one of this year's wildfires. I stumbled upon it today, almost entirely by accident, as I made my way, ever higher, to clear the rooftops and telephone poles and strip malls of this charming Northwest town, on my way to photograph some of the most beautiful hillsides in the region.
But as I was walking, I spotted a burnt-out home, a quarter-mile and halfway up the darkened hill. Sage Hills Preserve in Wenatchee, WA. Don't miss this drive-thru diner on your way into Wenatchee. We stopped for a butterscotch shake and it was fantastic. Next time I'm going for a real fruit huckleberry shake. We didn't try the burgers, but they get great reviews, and any place that ponies up for Tillamook cheese is already a cut above. Trees along the hillside where the wildfire burned in Wenatchee this year. These are actually just a few yards from the house I posted back in September.
It has taken me a long time to go back and look at these pictures. A very powerful memory there. Overwhelming, in fact.
It is still difficult for me to understand or revisit that afternoon on the hillside. The world did not make sense for what must have been a brief, but seemed like a prolonged and never-to-be-finished, period of time.
When I think of all that devastation, I still can't make sense of it today. The best place to view this marvel is at the Saddlerock Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Wenatchee, Washington, which is where I took this photo. One of many trails in the Sage Hills Preserve in Wenatchee, WA. Taken October 2015. While out for a walk down by the Columbia River, I snapped this photo. I love the play of light with the clouds and water and the tension that creates.
Wenatchee, WA The dead, dry foothills of the Northern Cascades. The Apple Capital Loop Trail through the Wenatchee Valley offers beautiful views of the Columbia River and the surrounding area. Bike, rollerblade, walk, or jog; you can hop onto the trail through many of the parks near the river. Living in the middle of a rainforest for the last three decades has made me a huge fan of -- the desert. Actually, anywhere east of the Cascades where the predominant climate veers towards the dry and ascetic, and the colors come in ranges and not a single verdant hue.
Don't get me wrong, I do not think I could live without the mountains and the forests and the alpine meadows. It's just that, come winter, the sponge-bath they provide can become a little wearisome.
If you want the colors of the desert and the high plains, head East from the mountains and you won't have far to travel. The general demarcation point in Washington for that switch in climate is probably Wenatchee. It's a pleasant town, with all the amenities, and East Wenatchee is its next-door neighbor.
As you can see from this view, the landscape has completely transformed from the wetter, greener, and more mountainous terrain in the West to the austere pattern you see here.
There are plenty of places to hike on this side of the Cascades, including a set of very respectable mountain peaks. But the sun actually makes an appearnce from time to time in the winter months. And a face full of sunshine can change your outlook almost in an instant. Wenatchee Railyard with the broad orange foothills rising up in the background. Near white river falls, Wenatchee,Washington Go. Here. Huge menu of sandwiches, pizza, wraps, salads and calzones. Awesome rainbow tie dye theme brightens up your mood the moment you walk up to the door. And the food is fresh, homemade and excellent! On our way to Wenatchee and Leavenworth, we stopped by this market to use the bathroom and saw this beautiful tractor. My son loves tractors and so we stayed longer than expected to sit on this tractor. It was 4th of July so this turned out perfectly! #LifeAtExpedia Hiking around the Sage Hills Preserve in Wenatchee Washington. Indoor rock climbing gym adjacent to Walla Walla Park on the banks of the mighty Columbia River. Have a cup of coffee, hard apple cider, and lunch and watch the fun.
