In an area with many unique natural attractions, this large lake appears next to tall mountains. Visit for beautiful views and interesting walks.

Yellowstone Lake in Yellowstone National Park is a marvel just by its location at such a high altitude. At 7,733 feet (2,357 meters) above sea level and with a surface area of 132 square miles (342 square kilometers), this is the largest high-elevation lake in North America. Although it’s located in a park with many hydrothermal features, don’t assume the water is warm. When you visit Yellowstone Lake dip a toe in, if you like, to discover the chill. The water may approach 70 F (21 C), but the average temperature is 41 F (5 C). The lake freezes over in winter.

The underwater geologic formations are remarkable, with the northern part of the lake differing from the southern portion. The northern sector has definite features of volcanic activity that’s in keeping with the park, but the area to the south shows the lakebed has been carved out by glaciers. Try scuba diving from July through September to view vertical spires and hot vents.

The lake drains to the north into the Yellowstone River, which flows into the Missouri River and eventually into the Atlantic Ocean. Fish for cutthroat trout, a species native to the Pacific Ocean. Cook your catch on a campfire or check with lodge accommodations to see if they will prepare your fish for you.

Look for Stevenson Island in the lake’s northern sector, near the deepest part of the lake, which measures 390 feet (120 meters) deep. Boating is permitted on the lake but be aware that strict regulations regarding craft type and cleaning are enforced to protect the aquatic environment. To avoid a problem, rent a boat from one of the providers in the area.

Find many conveniences at Fishing Bridge along the lake’s northern section. From here, hike around its shores. You can also drive partway around the lake and use one of the many picnic areas.

Yellowstone Lake is on the Grand Loop Road between Fishing Bridge and Grant Village, with visitor centers at both locations. Pay the weekly or annual Yellowstone National Park entrance fee to enjoy the lake. Note that some roads close in winter.
