Tobacco Caye

Travel Guide

A turquoise sea with clear shallow waters and a distant landmass under a cloudy sky.
A beach with palm trees, a yellow shack, and a green building.

After walking around this island in just minutes and enjoying its solitary feel, go snorkeling in the Caribbean Sea.

Tobacco Caye is a miniscule Caribbean islet with a relaxed atmosphere created by hammocks and peacefulness. It is a serene oasis with modern necessities. Read a book as you listen to the sounds of the sea in this scenic haven.

Walk along the piers and dive into the sea for a refreshing swim in the warm, clear waters. Try to complete a loop around the island. Snorkeling will reveal colorful fish and coral beneath the water’s surface. Sunbathe on the sand that covers most of the island or lie in a hammock to read or nap.

Divers can organize a boat trip from one of the shops. Dive at Glover’s Reef and the Blue Hole to experience some of the world’s best scuba locations.

Watch local fishermen gutting their catch of the day. An intriguing array of fish, including stingrays and eels, come to eat the remains.

The sandy island has no roads or sidewalks. Only about 20 residents live among the restaurants and resorts packed onto the tiny land mass. Despite the lack of many signs of modernity on the island, you’ll find a few bars and lodges. Resort restaurants have specific meal times, when all lodgers eat together.

The hot, tropical region consists of two main seasons: dry from January to April and wet the rest of the year. The island has no schools, so island kids travel to other Belize locations by boat for their education.

Tobacco Caye is a tiny piece of land in the Caribbean Sea, 12 miles (19 kilometers) off Belize’s eastern coast. It is a 20-minute boat ride from the charming town of Dangriga. Boats also depart from the cay to nearby islands, such as Glover’s Reef. Once on the island, easily walk its circumference in less than 20 minutes.

Tobacco Caye is a hidden gem, with palm trees, sand and hammocks awaiting you.

"Great place! We enjoyed the pool very much as well as the shade to sit and watch sunrises and stars. It rained and the seagrass was horrible, but no why to plan for those things. Found wonderful places to eat out as well as a well stocked kitchen for cooking. Very quiet area yet close to the village ..."
