Yellowstone National Park
Go from one amazing attraction to another, with each one having its own unique features that never fail to fascinate.

With its 3,472 square miles (8,991 square kilometers) spanning three states, Yellowstone National Park is an impressive place to visit. It’s located over a subterranean volcano, resulting in an array of hydrothermal and geological features. Experience geysers in the park, watch wildlife, see a painted pool or listen to a mountain that is never quiet.

The world evolved billions of years ago, but this park still shows signs of development. Some of the turmoil from that ancient time is visible in the area of the park’s caldera, the remnants of a smoldering volcano. Notice hot springs and fumaroles, which indicate activity happening far beneath Earth’s surface.

Despite the internal heat, a high-altitude cold lake is located in this portion of the Rocky Mountains. Visit Yellowstone Lake at an elevation of 7,733 feet (2,357 meters) above sea level, making it North America’s largest high-elevation lake.

Among the various water features in the park, you’ll find numerous waterfalls, with Gibbon Falls one of the favorites. Fountain Paint Pot and Grand Prismatic Spring are bodies of hot, acidic water exhibiting incredible colors. Let your imagination wander at Dragon’s Mouth Springs where gases and steam from inside a cave give the illusion that a mythical creature lives within.

Old Faithful is one of about 500 geysers in the park, which has more than half of the world’s total geysers. The famous geyser is almost certain to put on a show while you’re at its visitor center. Refer to the National Park Service timetable for eruption schedules of this and other geysers.

Geological features are also fascinating, such as Roaring Mountain. It provides an eerie sight with no vegetation on one side and plumes of steam releasing hissing noises. These hot plumes, or fumaroles, are found throughout the park. Spot wildlife in Lamar Valley. Herds of bison are a common sight.

Have a great family vacation traveling around Yellowstone National Park. You can pay the weekly or annual fee at one of five entrances. Note that some roads close during winter.
