Staying in Higashi Chaya was unlike simply visiting a historic neighborhood. For a little while, it felt as though we were actually living inside a piece of Kanazawa’s history, not just looking at it from the outside.
The machiya itself made that feeling even more special. We had the entire house to ourselves, and the original wood and traditional character were beautifully balanced with a calm, contemporary design. The house was beautifully kept and very comfortable, with local art and craftsmanship thoughtfully integrated throughout the space. Self check-in was simple, and whenever we needed anything, the team was easy to reach online and very helpful.
One of our favorite experiences was making matcha ourselves. The traditional tea utensils were beautiful, and an easy-to-follow guide was provided, so even as beginners we could enjoy it at our own pace. Preparing tea together in the quiet machiya became one of those small moments that stayed with us after the trip.
Very few places have made us feel so connected to the destination itself. Staying here didn’t just give us somewhere beautiful to sleep, it changed the way we experienced Kanazawa. We would happily return.
