The town of Beech Mountain is the highest incorporated city east of the Mississippi River with year-round comfortable temperatures (OK-maybe the ski season temperatures are darn cold, but it is winter on a mountain after all).

4900+ square foot log home in moderately wooded setting located near by town's recreational facilities and 1.9 miles from Beech Mountain Resort parking lot entrance.

Home's exterior is field stone and cedar shake. The Lodge's interior, which is almost exclusively wood, creates rustic atmosphere with modern conveniences. Wood beamed ceilings throughout. Many of the walls are 16'-24' thick hand-hewn logs. Interior materials are recycled from 148 year-old grist mill located in Chatham, Virginia; the 142 year-old Reedy Fork Mill formerly outside Winston-Salem, NC; and, a barn of unknown age and origin in the Banner Elk area.

Living room, dining room, and kitchen floors are hardwood (area rug covers almost all of living room); all upper halls and bedrooms are carpeted. The ground floor and bathrooms are ceramic tiled.

Large living room with over-sized wood burning fireplace (firewood provided). Dining room is 10' x 35' and seats 30 at one sitting. Kitchen has flat-surface stove top, separate flat-surfaced stove with self-cleaning oven, combination microwave/range hood and two GE refrigerators with ice makers. TV room has 55" Samsung flat panel smart TV with YouTube TV digital streaming service, high-speed broadband internet access, VCR/DVD player and surround sound system as well as a queen-size sleeper sofa, which may be used as eleventh bedroom. Third floor hallway has foyer with large window seat, sofa, and 42' flat panel TV with YouTube TV and a PlayStation 4 game system.

Our stay at the Great Escape Lodge was fantastic! The house is a magnificent historical structure. All rooms were ready and perfect for our arrival (bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, etc...all perfect). We grilled and shared stories and good laughs on the back deck. The living room was perfect for all of us to catch up after a day of activities and share our adventures. Key for us was how easy the owners made everything for our stay. They even went the extra mile to be sure we had directions to navigating the mountain and knowing where to get groceries, dinner, hiking, etc. Hospitality and flexibility were greatly appreciated. We good not have enjoyed our stay more!

Great, but less secluded than expected

Wasn't expecting the property to be located in a densely populated neighborhood, but overall we had a great stay! The house has so much character and is located in a beautiful area. John was also incredibly helpful, we would definitely stay again.

Family Long Weekend

From age 78 to 3 years, our family of 16 people, enjoyed staying here. There were a few issues because of the previous tenets but the owner was very helpful in working with us on everything. The kitchen was a little smaller than I had thought it would be for a house that can hold 30 people - but we were able to grill steaks, hamburgers and have taco night in our three night stay without any issues! It was a great weekend and John is great to work with!

Could not have been better!

John was very polite and enjoyable to correspond with throughout the rental process and made sure we had all the info we could want/need about the property and surrounding area. The lodge was in great shape and very clean. Even with 22 guests we never felt crowded and no one ever had to wait for an open bathroom. I highly recomend this property to any group looking for a great mountain weekend for an amazing price! We will deffinately be coming here again!

Spacious home in beautiful Beech Mountain

Our trip to Beech Mountain was great. The house was large and accommodated our group of 17 comfortably. Our 7 kids had a great time playing hide and seek in this charming home. John was a pleasure to work with and addressed any problems in such a timely manner. Perfect place for large groups. On one of the days we were there, it was raining all day and we got to enjoy the beautiful fireplace inside.

Had a great time; quiet with lots of animals...saw lots of deer and fawns, mama bear and cub, skunk ( which we managed to avoid )..... the deer just wander around the property and streets. The house is very roomy with lots of bedrooms / beds and plenty of living space, kitchen well equipped.

If your are looking for a modernized cabin, then its not recommended to go. Overall the expreience was wonderful meaning my family was able to see something different from the modern lifstyle that we are use to. John is a great host..easy to reach via landline and or cell if your service works. Nieghbors in area were friendly as well. Perfect place for relaxing and sight seeing .

Pros - very specious house can easily accommodate 20 people, and unique 100 + year property. Very nice owner Decent deck and grill. Cons - poor maintenance aged appliances Aged beds, furniture, etc Poor electric supply or has issues in every corner of home Poor entertainment setup No Children or adult play games If your group is not large, look somewhere else, I would not recommend this property.

Property Manager Made the Stay

The property was amazing. Plenty of fire pits, plenty of beds and even enough room for a Cornhole tournament out front. We mostly stayed in the house during our stay but we also made it out to some hiking trails. The previous tenants broke a few things and they hadn't quite gotten fixed yet by the time we got there, but the owner was very transparent about the whole process and extremely concerned about our stay. Ultimately it wasn't anything day ruining but it's nice to see an owner that willing to work with you.

Won't recommend!

10 rooms but they are all super tiny. Top floor is like a hot furnace. No A/c, no fan. We couldn't use the top floor at all. People slept on the floor instead. 🔥 Bathrooms don't have soap or toilet rolls. Bring your own. Washer and dryer don't work. The owner /property manager is a gem of a human being. Kind and gentle. He was very quick with responses, and provided a lot of useful info. Perhaps that's the only good thing about this property that is worth mentioning.

Wonderful mountain home. Great size and location for our group

We had a great experience at the Great Escape Lodge. We had 5 families with 12 kids altogether and more than enough room for everyone to spread out. Not once did it feel crowded. The house had everything we needed to cook dinners every night for all the families and store everything we used. I liked how there was a separate living/tv room off the dining area so the kids could play and watch a movie while the adults ate and hung out by the fireplace in the main living room. Location was good in that it was quiet and wooded; yet less than a 10 minute drive from all the amenities at Beech Mountain resort and the town. Unfortunately the weather conditions weren’t good for skiing, but we all still enjoyed it. John the owner was very thorough in terms of detailing the house, area, what we needed to bring, and suggestions on the area. He was also so responsive if there was anything we needed. Would highly recommend for big groups and would certainly come back

Family Gathering

Unique Log Home is a fitting description. The house has good bones, spacious and the location is beautiful. Space worked well for a family gathering of about 20 people. Furniture and carpeting need updated, as do some of the bathrooms. But overall the space worked well. Did enjoy the large eating area. That said, the house is in need of upgrades in appliances, furniture and carpeting. It is also in need of some general maintenance throughout.. Outside deck is a great space, with a beautiful view. However, it is in need of a good cleaning and staining. That said, host did give us a heads up. Firepit was enjoyable and we used it every night. Firewood was provided, which was convenient and appreciated, but no furniture was provided. The surrounding yard needs maintenance, grass needs to be cut, debris removed and some dead trees taken down. All in all we had a great time with family and enjoyed our stay on Beech Mountain. The large, spacious house worked for our group.
