Leave the noisy city streets behind and unwind in a peaceful haven of native flora and fauna.
Admire a vibrant array of plants such as roses, marigolds and orchids at Pondicherry Botanical Gardens. Go for a ride on the toy railway and see sparkling fish at the aquarium.
Walk around the gardens in the shade of more than 1,500 species of plant and tree. Created by the French in 1826, the park is spread over 22 acres (9 hectares) of flat land that is connected by narrow paths and open fields.
As you explore, look for traditional Indian flowers including jasmine, bright orchids and many different species of rose. These are organized into pretty arrangements that are labeled with their English and scientific names.
Look up and you will find a thick canopy of tree life. Take a seat on the grass beneath the wide leaves of palm trees and breathe in the sweet smell of fresh pine that penetrates the humid air. You can also admire wiry eucalyptus alongside cork and rosewood trees.
Several fountains are positioned around the garden. One of the most striking is the fountain decorated with a statue of two white bulls that are shown about to lock horns in battle.
When it’s time for a breather, take a seat on the miniature train. This departs from near the entrance and meanders gently around the garden, offering views of some of the most interesting plants.
A trip to the garden is not complete until you have seen the aquarium. Small tanks are alive with gold and silver ornamental fish that sparkle in the light. There are also starfish, peculiar shellfish and turtles.
Pondicherry Botanical Gardens can be found on the northeast side of town next to the bus station. The gardens are open all day and entry is free.
