Lodge in the main town of Bezau, which is a popular base to explore the many ski resorts and hiking routes. Understand the area’s traditional customs in the Heimatmuseum Bezau and embark on the scenic Bregenz Forest Walk that passes through 12 traditional villages. Ride the iconic Bregenzerwaldbahn train between the villages of Reuthe and Schwarzenberg. In winter, go skiing in the resorts of Sonderdach, Bödele and the Damüls/Mellau.

Travel to the charming hamlet of Alberschwende and appreciate its tranquility. Admire the barn-like Mesmers Stall building that is used for weddings, see the Hermann Gmeiner Saal banquet hall and attend an open-air music concert in the central plaza.
Head east to the village of Egg for the Egg Museum, which claims to be the region’s oldest museum. Learn about agricultural customs and regional history through its exhibits. The nearby villages of Schoppernau, Thal and Schwarzenberg are ideal places to see old-fashioned forest homes.
The Bregenz Forest region runs through the state of Vorarlberg, toward the western border of Austria. Close to the Rhine Valley, the area is split into the Vorderwald (Lower Forest) and the Hinterwald (Upper Forest) sections. From Zürich in Switzerland, drive east for about 90 miles (145 kilometers) to arrive in 2 to 3 hours. While you’re in the area, consider visiting Lake Constance, the Walensee and the town of Feldkirch.
