Discover fields of rhododendrons and fragrant herbs as you make your way to the summit of Doddabetta Mountain. Head to the telescope tower to gaze over the skyline of Ooty and look further to the sweeping forests of Bandipur National Park.
With its peak standing at 8,650-feet (2,637-meters) above sea level, Doddabetta Mountain is the highest point in the district. Its closest competitors are Chamundi Peak to the north and Kattadadu further west. Both of these are visible from Doddabetta Peak on a clear day.
Start the 2-mile (3-kilometer) ascent of Doddabetta Mountain along rugged, winding paths that lead into open fields. Your journey will pass long, grassy slopes lined with rows of ferns and sub-alpine herbs that fill the fresh air with rich aromas. Be alert to spot colorful rhododendrons dotted among the greenery.
As you approach the peak you will notice that it holds a slightly curved flat surface. This means that there are plenty of places to sit and relax in the sun after the journey up.
After a rest, make your way to the octagonal-shaped telescope tower that rises out of the middle of the peak. This indoor platform has several telescopes that you can use in order to make the best of the breathtaking panoramic views. Along with Ooty to the west you can also see the great open highlands of Mysore and Bandipur National Park to the north.
Doddabetta Mountain is situated about 4 miles (7 kilometers) east of the city center and is best reached by public bus. If you would rather not walk to the top you can catch a ride with one of the shuttle jeeps that run throughout the day. Come early in the morning to avoid the crowds and the frequent afternoon mist.
