The native bush conceals a great range of wildlife, from wood pigeons and silvereyes to the tui birds that are native to New Zealand. Listen to the varied calls of the birds, as you trek along the nature trails of this picturesque reserve.
Embark on the Kākā Point Bush Walk, a 30-minute loop trail that meanders through the diverse vegetation. Once in the heart of the reserve, you’ll feel as though you’re exceptionally secluded, despite remaining in close proximity to the rest of Kākā Point Township and its beach. Wander between the trees of this park and hike to the Clutha River to go angling for salmon and trout among other fish.
Find lodging at the Kākā Point Camping Ground, which skirts the eastern edge of the reserve. It has many cabins and spaces to park your RV or set up a tent. Let your kids frolic in the play area and prepare for a game of tennis on the courts.
Head east to the shore area of Kākā Point, which is graced with a golden beach. Try the drinks at the bar and restaurant. You can also bring your own snacks and refreshments to enjoy in the designated picnic areas.
The Kākā Point Scenic Reserve is at the western edge of Kākā Point Township, which overlooks Molyneux Bay in the southeastern corner of the South Island. Drive south from Dunedin for 60 miles (100 kilometers) to travel here in a little more than 1 hour.
