Some of France’s best fashion deals appear in the busy shopping streets at the heart of Marseille, alongside new and enduring landmarks.

The sportswear that Marseille’s people are known for originated in Belsunce. A whole generation of soccer players spread its fame. Though just a few streets away from the well-heeled terraces of the Vieux Port, Belsunce is a whole different world, a true cultural icon, celebrated in song. A visit to Belsunce is the perfect opportunity to pick up a classic Olympique Marseille zip-up or go hunting for a good deal on the season’s trendiest sneakers.

Get familiar with the area at the Centre Bourse, a large shopping center that houses major brands in the Galerie Lafayette department store. While here, stop at the Musée de l’Histoire de Marseille and the accompanying Jardin des Vestiges, an archaeological site discovered when digging the foundations of the mall. For more museums, head a few streets over to the Musée de la Marine, which celebrates France’s naval history, especially on the Mediterranean.

Head up to the Porte d’Aix to appreciate its statuary. A market springs up at its base, celebrating the multicultural North African heritage of Marseille. More fresh goods are on sale at La Halle Puget, perfect for picking up a picnic or snacks to eat as the sun goes down.

After a long and busy day of shopping, relax in the atmospheric quiet of the Alcazar, a former theater and landmark of the city and now a public library.

Belsunce is in the center of Marseille, behind the Vieux Port and easily accessible by all of Marseille’s public transportation systems: bus, tram and metro. Walk from Gare St-Charles in a few minutes. Given the area’s heavy traffic, as well as pedestrian-only streets, it is best explored on foot, though limited street parking is available as well as a few metered garages. Be wary of pickpockets and use vigilance when walking around at night.
