For a well-rounded day in Fukuoka, visit Seaside Momochi. This waterfront area on Hakata Bay offers a series of beaches and seaside attractions beneath the futuristic Fukuoka Tower. The neighborhood was originally developed for the 1989 Asia Pacific Expo. Today you’ll find tree-lined streets, striking architecture, public parks and several shopping and dining options, all in a pleasant oceanfront setting.
Spend a few hours in the sun on Momochihama Beach, a stunning expanse of golden sand and azure waters. Watersports, from windsurfing to paddleboarding, are popular here, or you can join one of the many beach volleyball matches that are usually going on. During the summertime, the beach transforms into a bustling party scene after dark. Can’t get enough beach? Take the pedestrian bridge to Jigyo Beach, to the east, for a change of scenery.
For shopping and dining, walk to the center of the beach area to the Marizon shopping complex. Set on its own artificial island, the complex offers several shops, seafood restaurants, water-sports rental shops and even a wedding chapel. Ferry service to Uminonakamichi departs from Marizon throughout the day, delivering passengers to various Hakata Bay attractions, including the Uminonakamichi Seaside Park and Marine World aquarium.
Take a break from the sun and zoom up the elevator to the three-story observation deck at the nearby Fukuoka Tower. At 767 feet (234 meters) tall, the tower is the city’s highest building. Adorned with 8,000 glittering mirrors, the tower was built in 1989 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Fukuoka City.
Learn about the region’s history and cultural development at the Fukuoka City Museum. The excellent permanent exhibit explains the role Fukuoka played in trade and cultural exchange between Japan and the Korean Peninsula. Much of the exhibit is interactive and in English.
Reach Seaside Momochi via subway to the Tojinmachi or Nishijin subway station, then walk for 15 to 20 minutes to reach the park. You may also take the Nishitetsu bus line from the Hakata or Tenjin station, getting off at the Fukuoka Towe Minamiguchi stop. Parking is available for a fee at the park.
